Section 44 will be enforced in hope to cut road accidents

BANGKOK, 4 January 2017 (NNT) - The government will enforce Section 44 of the interim charter to tighten road rules up following a rising number of road accidents during the New Year. The punishment for violating traffic laws will be increased.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday said the government will take legal actions against all types of public vehicles breaking traffic rules. Section 44 would be enforced in the hope to prevent accidents before the Songkran festival in April this year, he said.

Deputy Government Spokesman Col.Athisit Chaiyanuwat said the Cabinet had approved a draft of the Land Transport Act that adjusted fines for petty offences in line with the current situation and the criminal code. The law was aimed at making commuters fear to break traffic rules, he said.

Government Spokesman Lt.Gen.Sansern Kaewkamnerd added that the government would enforce Section 44 while the parliament considered the draft Act. Passenger vans that carried more passengers than they could take would face more penalties, said the spokesman.

Deputy Spokesman of the National Council for Peace and Order Col.Sirichan Ngathong said the government stepped up its road safety measures on the last day of the New Year's festival with a focus on public vehicles.

From 29 December 2016 to 3 January 2017, more than 4,200 vehicles were impounded and almost 60,000 commuters faced charges.

Death penalty would work. Added value, a 90% decrease in traffic congestion.

After last week announcing minor fines would be reduced to 100 baht as a holiday gift to motorists.

It'd also cause the extinction of the Thai nation. But that shouldn't be a reason not to implement it.

Please let there be some hi-sos fucking up and getting arrested and held accountable on a "fair scale"...Not wishing any deaths, but let's get tough on them all, evenly, especially when drunk...

    I know...It's only a dream...

Must just be me missing something. Thought enforcement was the duty of the police, not the government?

As with mush in Thailand, the laws are already there, just seldom used.

    I allways say

Thailand is 40 years behind UK in road safety!

8000 killed on UK roads in 1970. Seems about right. Thailand will catch up in 40 years time.

    Anyone got the video?

PATTAYA: — A video is doing the rounds of social media after a drunk woman driver hit a motorcycle and dragged the bike for three kilometers before stopping.

The woman only stopped because she could go on no longer as the bike had burst into flames, reports Daily News.

But oblivious to the situation she just sat by the road while other people put out the fire.

The latest madness on the Thai roads happened in the Pattaya area on a soi leading to Sukhumvit Road on Tuesday.

The video was posted by a motorcyclist who saw the white pick-up approaching with the bike wedge underneath. Sitthichai Phonsrisom turned round and followed with his mobile recording for evidence purposes.

After the pick-up stopped and the woman got out the motorcyclist involved in the accident arrived on the scene. He said the accident occurred three kilometers away.

He was only bruised and cut but his wife had been taken to hospital.

Na Jomtien police arrested the female driver of the pick-up. She was charged with negligent driving causing injury, drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.

She was bailed in the sum of 100,000 baht.

Coming down harder on the police might be a start. No point in projecting diatribe to the public if the ones ordered to project and serve don't follow through!
