Passengers flying in/out of Thailand must pay new Bt15 surcharge each per flight

PASSENGERS travelling in and out Thailand now have to pay a surcharge of Bt15 per person per flight segment. The funds raised from the surcharge will be primarily used for improvements to the country’s aviation system as overseen by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, such as upgraded safety standards. But the move has angered the head of a travel agents’ association.

The CAAT and the International Air Transport Association agreed on November 1 to implement the new charge, but it did not go into full effect until yesterday.

I'm crying foul. That's about $500,000 per annum.

Not going to pay for anything except someone's car and golf lessons for the gick.

Remember the Departure Tax that was 500 baht? Payable in cash at the departure gates.

This was then embedded in the ticket cost, and I think was upped to 1000 baht a few years ago? Or a few officials were lobbying for it to be increased.

^Years ago Thai's had to pay an exit tax as well as the departure tax. Foreigners did not. Seem to recall it was B2000.

    Cheers, TP

I first came here in 2000, upon leaving at Don Muang you had to pay 500b cash departure tax before going through the gates.

Same in 2001, and I think in 2004/5.

It was at some stage inbuilt into the main ticket price.

    A quick google.

It was up to 700 baht and inbuilt into the ticket price as of 2007.

"The below is from the Suvarnabhumi Airport website. Since February 1, 2007 the 700 Baht international departure tax was included in the price of flight tickets."

So I guess it is now 715 baht, unless there was another increase between 2007 and 2016.

Good, so we have a time frame now for when it was first introduced.

715 baht per international traveler will quickly add up. Wonder where it all goes.
