Man Slips From Khlong Saen Saep Pier, Drowns (Video

BANGKOK — A 50-year-old man died this morning after he jumped from a boat pulling up to a pier and fell into the Saen Saep canal during the rush hour commute.

Police named the victim as Teerapong Silalit. A security camera filmed Teerapong leaping from the boat onto the pier near St. Dominic School before the boat came to a complete stop. He slips and falls into the canal, appearing to hit his head against the boat as he enters the water.

The skipper wasn't even slowing down, let alone reverse thrusting.

Does appear that way and rather oddly unsafe.

    Poor guy must have dissolved.

The pilot/driver/drunk angry somchai in control of the boat was probably too busy picking his nose to stop.

They really do seem quite unfit to competently carryout the most basic of public services. Quite simply, they don't give a shit and nobody will reprimand them as they might lose face.

    Oddly unsafe?

Have you been in Thailand long?

What's surprising is that the workers didn't throw the commuters from the boat to the pier as it passed at full hilt. It actually slowed down a bit and moved towards the pier for a few seconds as it went passed. That counts as oddly safe in LoS.

Anyway, the guy jumped before the driver had brought the boat to rest. Christ knows why everyone is criticising him. The dead guy was at fault for disembarking before it was fucking obviously safe to do so.

The driver over-shot the jetty, spun starboard desperately to avoid port collision and fallen passenger, then probably avoided chopping the chap up in the manoeuvre.
The deceased passenger was doing what nearly every Thai does at some point, jump off a moving vehicle before arrival at point 'B'.

The driver was at fault in this case, he should have stopped for passengers to alight at their paid for destination, as per ticket bought/contracted.

Probably because the helmsman knew or could see in his mirrors that there was someone in the water near the prop.

As for the falling. Easy to do if there is a damp patch or you wore the wrong shoes that day.

Getting on and off a boat is not a task to be taken lightly.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

That's okay, they all provide lifejackets to the commuters.

They hand them to you on the pier before you embark, then take them from you on the pier after you disembark. It's a great, safe, efficient system.

    Oh right. No they don't.

Just hope that there's a White Knight among the gaping group of locals that doesn't mind irrevocably damaging his clothes, skin, eyes, and vital organs.

You spastic fuckhead, have you never been on a fucking boat on the fucking river, bollock brain?
I'll have to admit to being a bollock brain.

I haven't gotten a river taxi in about 10 years. Thank God.

I presumed they slow down a tad, pull over a little bit, and anyone who misses the pier, misses.

He took a gamble and like so many it didn't pay off , like so many here a loser will be resurrected as Liemem or Rant Orbison and so it goes.
Using the boat regularly few would wish to dive into the sewer to rescue anyone

A very tragic accident and condolences to his Family and Friends.

Personally I love the speed and thrill of the Saen Saep boats at full chat - an instant adrenalin rush and leaves you feeling so good to be alive in such an awesome and vibrant part of the world. Crew are master boathandlers and operate at the limits which inevitably leaves little margin for error.

Something about the percieved value of life here certainly make me value my own so much more.

I do take the San Saep canal boat as my condo in Bkk is next door. Find it physically quite an effort and do some Canadian Airforce stretches - deep knee bends and star jumps, before making the long leap. Hoping to land on some fat lady in the middle of the bench.

There must be a big pile of mobile phones down on the canal bed.

There should be life belts on the ferry piers, but of course the kids would pinch them for swimming.
