PM says Thailand will be corruption-free in 20 years

BANGKOK, 12 September 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said the government will not intervene in the Thai justice system, while urging everyone to cooperate with the government to combat corruption.

Presiding over the opening ceremony of the government's Anti-Corruption Day event, the premier said that corruption is the cause of social unrest and prevents the country from growing and developing in a sustainable way.

Gen Prayut said the Anti-Corruption Day event aimed to encourage everyone in the country to fight against all types of graft, to augment the government’s ongoing efforts. He further stated that every corruption-related case must be handled fairly, according to the legal procedures. The premier affirmed that the government will not interfere with the legal process.

He also cited the need to instill in younger generations negative attitudes towards corruption, in order to prevent it from occurring in the future. Gen Prayut also expressed confidence that Thailand will be free of graft in 20 years, as his government has an effective plan in place.

Yea sure, but events of the past will be "grandfathered in."

Rajabhakti Park: The corruption case the Thai junta doesn't want you ...

    Asian Correspondent

Dec 17, 2015 - The statues of seven past Thai kings in Rajabhakti Park, a military-sponsored project embroiled in corruption allegations.

........Rajabhakti Park is a project sponsored by the Thai military in another very public display of its loyalty to Thailand’s monarchy, of which it regards itself to be its ultimate protector amid growing concerns over the health of long-reigning King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turned 88 years old earlier this month.........he first rumors surfaced in early November as irregularities in the financing of the tall bronze statues were called into question. Specifically the high costs of reportedly 43 to 45.5 million Baht ($1.19 to $1.26 million) each, with payouts to middlemen, including an army colonel and several amulet traders, of roughly 10 percent “commission”called into question.

    Not openly, anyway.
And of course, when the judiciary don't do their job (as in hi-so crims getting off), they (the gov) certainly openly take the hands-off approach.

... So this is how it ends? Not with a bang but with a whimper?

The Apocalypse is upon us, I'm dead and have been transported to an alternative reality?!

    Well that's...disappointing.

Thailand's corruption could be eliminated within 20 years, all it would take would be either a nuclear war or a large asteroid that would wipe out all life on Earth.

It's an interesting connection you make there, is this your way of admitting that you have big faith in him?

    No.

Seems as the main problem of corruption in Thailand is the patronage system, and his whole agenda is based on supporting the patronage system - he will be doing nothing to undermine corruption other than eliminating competing groups, so that his group get all the time at the trough...

Or the equivalent. Prosecution of all who recieve or pay for favors equally. Not likely.

Possibly he has been misquoted. Twenty generations might do it.

Ha ha ha the 1st thing you think of when you talk to anybody in Thailand in authority is "how much will this cost"
It's unthinkable how will they get police men to enlist without T money
    Give them 1000% raise

I think there may have been something lost in the translation of 'corruption'.

In 2013 the NACC said they had over 25,000 cases of graft on their books. At the pace the Thai justice system works it will take more than 20 years to clear all of them through the courts with appeal after appeal.
Then even if corruption can be stopped there are the cases between 2013 and 20 years from now.

Gonna need more courts, judges and prisons.

Remember TIT and anyone with resources can stay out on bail and drag appeals out for 15 years or more even after conviction, so even if the crackdown began today there would be no hurry on those prisons.

Couldn't be any worse than the last 60-70 [or more] years.
