    South Korea Earthquakes

Dirk is live at the scene.

Magnitude-5.1 earthquake jolts southeastern S. Korea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 jolted the country's southwestern region, South Korea's meteorological agency said Monday.

Busan Regional Meteorological Administration pinpointed the epicenter of the quake at 9 kilometers south of Gyeongju, some 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The quake detected at 7:44 p.m. was felt throughout Gyeongsang Province.

The administration said there was a very strong aftershock measuring magnitude 5.8 that rocked the same region around 8:35 p.m. This second quake was felt even in Seoul.

No damage was immediately reported, including at the Wolsong, Hanul and Gori nuclear power plants located in the Gyeongsang region.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. said all nuclear reactors in the country were not affected and producing electricity.

Most people in the region felt homes and buildings shake, with residents living in an 80-story highrise in Busan saying they felt the building shudder.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Security said no damage has been filed so far, although there was a spike in people calling authorities to find out about the quake. It said some people scared by the tremor evacuated buildings.

Authorities also said some KTX bullet trains halted operations, while South Korea's most-used mobile messenger KakaoTalk went offline shortly after the quake in Gyeongju. (Yonhap)
Too right we felt it, I had a bottle of water in front of me doing the Jurassic Park number then the second one had my wardrobes banging and I had to push the telly back towards the wall.

I was quaked too; sitting on me seat, it shook and I stood up thinking somebody was behind me shaking it or something weird... Lasted about 2 - 3 seconds, imho. No biggie, just hope it isn't a new weapon from the North or linked to their nuke testing.

Yeah they caused an earthquake that could be felt in China, but that was a few days ago. This was a tremor followed by an earthquake, although I can't make any sense of that.

Members in Gyeongju city (North Gyeongsang province) should exercise caution and follow official directives after a magnitude 5.4 earthquake at 20.32 on 12 September, following a magnitude 4.9 tremor at 19.49 (both times local). No major damage or casualties have so far been reported. Several bullet train services were temporarily halted after the tremors, and other trains have been ordered to operate at reduced speed near the epicentre. However, flight operations have been unaffected at Gimhae International Airport (PUS), serving Busan (Gyeongsang province) 50 miles (80km) south of Gyeongju.
