Min of Education aims to make students proficient in everyday English within 3 yrs

BANGKOK, 27 July 2016 (NNT) - The Education Minister has said that teacher training must focus on communication skills and the ability to make students understand course content, while the ministry aims to make students proficient in everyday English within three years.

Speaking at Srinakharinwirot University, Minister of Education Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan delivered a keynote address on teacher development and educational agendas.

He also highlighted the current shortage of teachers. There are 6,570 teaching vacancies at the elementary, 1,180 at high schools and 662 at special education institutions. To address the teacher shortage, the ministry has detailed a five-year plan to establish provincial school boards, equip teachers with skills relevant to the 21st century, and revise the teacher training system.

Gen Dapong added that within two years, the ministry aims to minimize memorization learning in classrooms. Within three years, the ministry aims to make students in all schools proficient in everyday English and internet usage.

    In your dreams, General.

Say what? It was YOU, Minister General, that has blocked teacher license exams for the last 2 years.

Yet your own ministry still uses reams of paperwork and almost zero email and an unhelpful website. Teachers need to travel to your offices to do the most basic of things such as simply registering for an exam.

Again, in your dreams. You need a crafted curriculum and teachers who know how to teach it. Try aiming for 10 years to get the teachers and curriculum right, then talk about phasing it in to schools.

With what teachers? The NES ones you harass and make life difficult to just be here, or the non-proficient Thai teachers?

Pipe dreams. That speech had no sincerity and was written just to sound good.....either that or the guy is stoned and just burbling.

This is funny because it was only about 3 years ago they decided NOT to make English compulsory in schools and become the defacto 2nd language.

Step 1 is convincing them to want to learn English. Step 2 is taking the clowns and dedicated buffoons who do not want to learn and getting them out of the English classroom.

Typical Thai posturing from a hidebound class of apparatchiks immune from criticism because of a castrated press and compliant population incapable of achieving maturity until their mid 40s.

Hubristic and utterly fatuous claims with imbecilic deadlines rooted in fantasy have been the way for years.

Quite difficult to find English understanding staff in provincial Thailand...
I had an interview for one staff and she always answered yes to my speech and i asked her, so what was your duties on your last job, YES...
I realized then that all my explanations were for nothing, got new strategy by asking that question first at next interview...

I opted for another criteria to get a secretary as well in Thailand, by asking the lady to type few words on a PC, if she was not able to type with 10 fingers, it was a lost cause most times.
Monday,Tuesday, then it goes WTF !

    Yep,

Most up country Teachers cannot speak English properly themselves so what chance has a kid got learning the fookin Language. ?

    Fook all.

It's understandable though because their native language is Thai and not English.

It's only the Hi-So's who can afford to send their kids to a proper school and the normal Thai kid must plod along learning shite.

    Typical stuff innit.

Exactly why this shit hole must endure Somchai the idiot.

Yep, isn't that pretty much the way it works at home? It is regrettable that children must make such important and irrevocable decisions concerning their educations and futures at such an early age.

Fixed that for you. While I've met many superb Thai English teachers, I've met an equal number that can't speak English.

You never know, the Thais may just have hit on the ideal scheme for teaching English. With a bit of luck they may even allow you to enroll.

    Even that's a struggle

    Yes,

Well since I am so proficient in English maybe i should step up and go North to teach the kids how to speak Australian.

    But on second thoughts,

Na fook it, the wages are shit.

Poor little buggers have enough to contend with as it is. To inflict an Australian accent on them would be cruel.

The first thing that Thailand should do is to ban dubbing foreign movies, documentaries ect on tv, theaters and any other media outlets and have Thai subtitles. You kill 2 birds in 1 stone. First they will listen to another language whatever language it might be and will/might learn from it. Second they will be able to read Thai better.
