Two Philippines notorious drug lords may be sent to an island prison

Philippine Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre 2nd has floated the idea of shipping two convicted drug lords from a prison in Metro Manila to an island prison to prevent them from directing their illicit operations from prison, The Manila Times Online reported on Friday.

The idea came after President Rodrigo Duterte revealed the names of three top drug lords in Malacanang on Thursday. They are Wu Tuan alias Peter Co and Herbert Colangco alias Ampang.

Duterte said on Thursday that the two had been directing the operations of their respective drug syndicates from the New Bilibid prison in Metro Manila. The third alleged drug baron, Peter Lim, who is abroad was warned by the president not to come back or be killed.

The president also said that the two convicted drug lords were given protection by retired police general Marcelo Garbo Jr. But Garbo denied the charge.

Justice Secretary Aguirre told reporters that the government would step up measures to prevent jailed drug barons from directing their illegal businesses, claiming that 75 percent of illicit drug trading all over the country were hatched or transacted inside the prison in Metro Manila.

He said that the government was considering sending Ampang and Co to Caballo island or to an island in the Palawan where there are no cellphone signals.

Caballo island which is beside Corregidor was where Filipino UN peacekeepers were quarantined for almost a month in 2014 because of fears that they might have Ebola virus.

^too much corruption among the police, military or prison staff. From what I've heard, rich ppl in prison have nice rooms, laundry service, etc.

My colleagues are speculating that Duterte might be "silenced" soon because he's causing too many ripples in the water. Even near my area, there's been recent drug busts, but minor players. Silenced kinda like JFK. We'll see...

Interesting times. I don't see Duterte lasting six years.

Filipinos like a calm, indifferent president. Duterte is not that.

    Clean the place up:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nisher-duterte

"More than 100 people have died – said to have been mostly suspected drug dealers, rapists and car thieves – in stepped up anti-crime police operations since the election on 9 May."

    The clue is in "suspected."

Just kill em, it';s cheaper. Besides, the Philippines is Catholic, and the best part of that is all you have to do is confess it to the Priest, he wipes the slate clean and you're good to go again.

The guardian would say that. They are "suspected" because no court has come to a verdict. It's a third world solution to a third world problem. I have no problem with this. Yes, there wil be "collateral damage", it happens in every war, this is a war.

They're already in an island prison.

Just clean up Bilibid prison. Fire every guard and official, slap the bad boys in solitary, hire decent staff at a decent wage, etc, etc. The place is, and always has been, a fucking disgrace.

So, you have no problem with state sponsored murder because it's the 3rd world.

    Ok then.

And it's not a war. Any supposed "war on drugs" was proven to be futile a long time ago-as is this nonsense.

It is nonsense as it is politics and voters like to hear such things. He doesn't actually believe it, just pandering to the masses.

You got that wrong. Look at Davao. He is serious fighting drugs.

There is a risk of it getting out of hand. He was able to control it quite well in Davao. Can he control it on national level or will it degenerate into localized vendettas? Only time can tell.

It doesn't take a crystal ball & incense to foresee it will go pearshaped immediately.

Don't you remember Thaksin's war on drugs and all the small time dealers & users who were killed/arrested just to fulfill quotas?

And... are there any less drugs in Thailand now because of it?

I don't have the answers to the problem, but I would have thought the aim is to reduce suffering, not to create more.

No, because Thaksin was disposed of by the military. Quite possibly because the anti drug effort was successful. Besides Thaksins attempt to gain control over the military.
