A recurrence of Avian flu and an inability to tackle their penchant for slavery, brutal exploitation and deception in food production will ensure these hubristic ambitions will fail.

They've got a new paste-like product apparently called Soylent Green. The production involves some unpalatable practices but that hasn't stopped them in the past

I spend quite a bit of time in Isaan with the family - rice farmers of course, some veggies & tobacco. Thailand has a LONG way to go to emerge from subsistence farming to large-scale export of foods (except rice of course).

    * Supposed to insert a pic Screen Dump from Wiki about Medieval farming, but I am too stupid to get it to onto here.....*

Commercial grown tobacco or for familiar/local use?
    Where in Isaan are you?

As tobacco here is highly restricted to where the profitable commercial product can flourish - selected areas of Sukhothai, Plok, Phetchabun, Uttaradit, and Phichit.

Unless the bylaws have been modified allowing other regions to grow commercial tobacco by the highly controlling Thailand Tobacco Monopoly - it's possible such restrictions have changed.

On the way to Sakhon Nakhon from Kalasin. Get up there about 4 times per year - mainly the major Thai holidays (the Drive of Near Death normally)

Some rice is for sale - the rest is for family. Same as veggies & tobacco (subsistence). The ground is like concrete most of the year. Some tapioca on the farms, small fish. Usual stuff.

First they need to have a water management system, perhaps?

Until they can do that, best leave the big proclamations out of it.

Great declarations and dreamy image inducing claims are what they do well - almost an industry in itself.

I visited the ThaiFex food show at Impact Arena last week and the competetion offered by neigbouring countries is strong.

Thailand producers must improve their standards just to remain regionally competitive.
