I agree that appearance is a big thing in Thailand, but Ive seen a good few topless Thai guys sat drinking in the mom and pop shops. There's a lot of non conformists out there.

Don't need to be rude nor pedantic, is it a certain period of the month or something like this that turns some members so sensitive? You sound (or read) like a bitter moron (I really hope you're not)...

Being shirtless, during Songkran festivities, in Chiang Mai ... oh my, need to send the Swat team to crackdown on him! Quick!

As a matter of fact being shirtless is indeed not "polite" by Thai standards but making it illegal during Songkran festivities sounds a bit too much (specially considering other grime issues not sufficiently adressed)... Driving shirtless is illegal thought.

I can't count the shirtless thai people I saw during Songkran festivities, too many of them, mostly drunk and therefore disinhibited...take a break, after all it's new year ...

Outside festivities days I saw many thai shirtless when chilling out in the shades (small soi in town, under trees or Salas in the country side) or doing some works on the car, in the garden or fields... not polite but acceptable somehow.
But I don't remember seeing thais wandering shirtless in village/city, nor entering a venue (shop, bar ...), this would trigger some frown for sure...

He`s telling me that someone posted it on Facebook in Thailand and they have been arrested for cybercrime.
I asked him for a link, and he posted :

Cover-Up Crackdown Continues in Chiang Mai

    By Teeranai Charuvastra
    KhaoSod English

CHIANG MAI — A crackdown on shirtlessness this Songkran continued for a second day in Chiang Mai, with four men arrested for wearing what a police commander called “really ugly” attire.

Police identified the four men as Tai Yai, or members of Myanmar’s ethnic Shan group. They were arrested Thursday night and fined 500 baht for going shirtless, according to Chiang Mai City Police Station chief Weerayuth Prasopchokechai, while participating in the mass watery combat for which the festival is known.

The four did not only remove their shirts, Col. Weerayuth noted, but also wore their pants too low.

BANGKOK — A man was arrested for posting a video of a topless woman dancing during last year’s Songkran festival.

Police said Jakkrapatsorn Akkarapokanan, 29, was charged under the Computer Crime Act for posting the year-old video of a woman rolling up her wet shirt to let revelers touch her breasts. Besides being obscene and a bad example, police said, the video filmed on Bangkok’s RCA last year might mislead people into thinking it happened at this year’s S2O Songkran Music Festival.

“We seek a court warrant under the Article 14 of 2007 Computer Crime Act,” said Police Lt. Gen. Sanit Mahathaworn said in reference to two offenses, importing fraudulent information which can defame others and importing obscene information.

I know who he is and I don't really care a rats ass about the story, just find that people read an unsubstantiated story, on the net and believe blindly that it is the truth.

The reporter is in BKK, he sites no source in CM, just a photo, story could have read, faramg arrested for under sized water pistol.

Before I believe anything on the net, I want an informant, police, farang and or witnesses, until then, it's an unconfirmed page filler.

Let's have your address and we'll see if they can arrange a visit. I'm sure that as soon as they hear some dickwit farang doesn't believe their story they'll drop everything and rush to convince you of their honesty and sincerity.

I saw something the other day about something called the American Civil War but I'm not going to believe it actually happened until I get to speak face to face with an eyewitness or participant. Same same re the Roman empire, Genghis Khan, or Jim Collister.

Considering the thread's title, people may falsely be let to believe this pic was taken at this year's Chiang Mai New Year's celebration, so a warrant for your arrest will be issued in reference to two offenses, importing fraudulent information which can defame others and importing obscene information.

I read that there are some people who aren't able to tell the difference between fiction and reality, they lack the discriminatory abilities that most of us acquired at the age of 7 or so. In some ways they deserve sympathy as it must be a pretty crippling disorder for them, living in a complex world and unable to tell what's real and what's not, but on the other hand it might just be that they're a bit thick.

Lots of mankinis and gay boys being posted for some reason. Why so?

However, for the Dads, here's a link to the Silom topless coyote dancers that took place 5 or 6 Songkrans ago. Ive kept this link bookmarked ever since.
