Soi Cowboy bar owner dies in fall from 39th floor

The troubled US owner of a Soi Cowboy go-go bar died Monday after apparently falling from the 39th storey of his Bangkok condominium.

Darel Davenport (From his Facebook page)

Darel Davenport, 54, fell onto the second floor of a house located next to his Sukhumvit Soi 19 condo tower around 2.30pm while climbing over from the balcony of an adjacent room after he forgot his keys.

Pol Capt Pongsak Nonthachote, an investigator at Lumpini police station, confirmed the Davenport had locked himself out and asked owner of an adjacent condo to climb over. Forensic police found his fingerprints on the wall at the scene, Pol Capt Pongsak said, adding it was an accident.

Davenport's death marked the end of a five-week spiral that began on New Year's Eve when the majority partner in The Dollhouse, one of the oldest in Bangkok's adult nightlife industry, was attacked by staff members ......

I wonder how it was that as soon as I saw the headline I knew exactly who it was going to be?

By all accounts, he was having a really rough time of it recently. Even though, sad way to go and one of Cowboys real characters.

Ah f*ck. Shitty way to start the day.

Think it might have been taken down.

He definitely fell off the rails over the last two months of so. Years of heavy chemical abuse finally taking its toll I would think.

That might imply too close a relationship.

I think Darel probably knew a good proportion of the expats in Bangkok, but he was always a decent guy to me. Of course, as a bar owner he was a professional smoocher, but he still came across as fairly upfront to me. We did have one close friend to both of us in common so I suppose that may have dragged me in a bit closer to his circle than otherwise. Still been a while since I was down cowboy, so its more of a shock than a loss.

Darel was so full on all the time, hard to believe he came to this sad end.

I met him once, maybe a year or two ago, i had had a drink outside his bar and when the bill came i had been charged for beers instead of sodas.

the outside bartender got a bit uppity at my refusal to pay for something i hadn't had and i asked for the manager to be summoned.

the manager, whom i now recognise as darel, came and resolved matters in a friendly and professional manner, placating both myself and the bartender.

i dont know anything about his recent troubles, but if the reports of his heavy cocaine usage are to be believed, then it all makes perfect sense. cocaine is a very nasty and dangerous stimulant indeed.

Goodo, gotcha. It resonates with me a bit. Almost on the anniversary of a similar thing that occurred to a mate of mine.

Same with me, I have a close friend who is very close with Darel.

Met him and drank with him on several occasions but if I'm honest the situation / people were not to my total liking, all just a bit too full on for me. I'm not a huge fan of the environment, though I stress they were perfectly friendly etc.... I just am over downing trays of tequilas at 1am on a work night.....

the manager, whom i now recognise as darel
Darel was the (majority) owner, the manager was a Welsh guy who's name escapes me now, I found him less full on than Darel and my conversation with him was always a little less intense. Apparently the manager bailed last Friday as Darel's life spiralled out of control.

Seemed to have become unbalanced, pity nobody seems to have been able to help the guy. Looking at his pics he had quite a bad leg infection which had not healed up and that must have gotten him down. Very sad way to end up.

I doubt anyone, who has never tried it, realize how difficult and emotionally taxing it is to run a bar in Thailand and when employing basically poorly educated girls.

Most think it is a walk in the park and it is certainly not.

    RIP.

    ^^Bar?

    Err...GoGo Bar.

It's not exactly a 'side point'.

I doubt if anybody at all thinks it's a 'walk in the park'. I can't imagine why anyone would do it except for the shagging.

Oh, and they're probably good to get drugs from.

So, if that's the lifestyle you're after...
