50 Malaysian tourists refuse to pay 'foreigner' fee at Tarutao national park

Some 50 Malaysian tourists from Langkawi refused to pay the park fee of Bt200 when they arrived at Koh Lipe in the Tarutao national park Thursday, the chief of the park said Wednesday.

The park charges a Thai tourist Bt20 for the entry fee and a foreign tourist, 10 times higher or Bt200.

But the group of 50 Malaysian tourists refused to pay the fee at all, Panapol Chiwaserichon, chief of the Tarutao park, said.

Panapol said he did not want to get tough with tourists so he would hold a meeting with tourist boast and tourist company operators to discuss how to collect the entry fee from their clients.

You know it wont make any difference. The dude collecting the money will not give a flying fuk.

He will not let them in, easy as that.

he would hold a meeting with tourist boast and tourist company operators to discuss how to collect the entry fee from their clients.
He will probably try to convince the tour operators to collect the money and buy the tickets beforehand so the tourists won't know they are paying the full price (i.e., it will be included in the price of their tour).

Exactly. 10% of the fee to the tourist companies should keep everyone happy.

I can't see the fun in a day trip to a national park anyway, they're hot, green, humid and full of mosquitoes, like those in Malaysia. If you've seen one you've seen them all.

Will that not depend on how much vendors inside lose out, cold drinks, snacks etc ??

Malaysia should reciprocate and charge the Thai more for everything in Malaysia.

In fact, Asean should adopt this throughout the region just for the Thai.

At some point the Thai might be tempted to join the modern world and emerge from their weird little medieval state.

What is quite galling is that all foreign visitors pay airport duty tax on their ticketing whenever they enter a country.

Airport taxes are widespread around the world. Noise tax, pollution tax, departure tax etc. All in ticket prices.

Very balsy of them... I thought they would've been beaten to a pulp for their transgression.

That being said, I still think they should've at least paid the 20 baht entry fee no?

I assumed they walked away rather than pay the 200 baht. I guess you think they walked in without paying. The article doesn't make it clear.

50 of them outnumbers the people wanting the fee. Cant see how they would get beaten up by a girl collecting fees

Waste of a day to walk away over $7. What did they spend on hotel, boats and tour cost?

The fee will just be added to boat ticket prices. The Thais still want the money. Nothing will be cheaper.

Of course, The employees are only charging what they have been told to charge.

It's their job to sell the ticket not discuss the toss with punters.

At the end of the day most spill that 200 baht over the Bar, it's fook all.

    Aussies do anyway

you, and so many others just dont get it.

which is why western tourists are increasingly treated so disrespectfully like weak willed cash cows with money to throw away by the thais. these malays have got it right. if everybody walked, these unfair charges would be dropped in a flash.

25m tourists. You would have to tell them to avoid nps. Good luck!

Mind you some nps are dead quiet and they still charge the fee so it isnt demand driven

The difference in fees is due to the fact that Thai's (supposedly) pay their taxes to support the upkeep of the parks, while the foreigners do not.

Show your work permit at the gate to prove you pay tax and you will get in for the Thai rate (I've done it many times).

The Thai's - as usual - are just doing a lousy job of explaining the reasoning behind the difference.

if tourists are expected to pay 10 times more than locals, then the parks are entitled to
provide better services for tourists, such as information and signage in a couple of foreign languages, and employ staff whose idea of customer service is a little bit more than an icy stare followed by a demand for money and who can at least be bothered to stay awake for the duration of their shift.
