Tourist attraction charges 'farang' price to Thai man

A gatekeeper at a popular tourist destination in Krabi charged a Thai permanent resident 200 baht for a 20-baht entry ticket because he looks like a foreigner, or farang in Thai.

It is widely known that tourism-related businesses set different prices for locals and foreigners.

According to Facebook user Grittapohn Chattreesagoon, he and two of his friends, all from Phuket, went to visit Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot), an archaeological site in Krabi, last weekend. The gatekeeper charged his friends 20-baht each. The Facebook user, who was born in the United States but raised in Phuket, was told to pay 200 baht.

"My friends told the staffer that I'm from Phuket, but he insisted that I must pay 200 baht because I look like a farang. That was when we decided to leave the place immediately," the American-born Thai, whose real name is Jack Keen, wrote on his Facebook page.

A different staffer at the parking lot later approached the three people and asked them why they were leaving so soon. After they explained, the employee told them that Emerald Pool recently installed a new management team which performed poorly. The staffer then apologised on behalf of ...

All he had to do was to show his Thai ID card. If he doesn't have one well then he is not Thai. He has to do that if he drives into a Moohbahn to visit friends?

Storm in a tea cup. FaceBook user being "offended" and boring.

ID card or, Driving License which can get you the thai price even if you're a Farang.

But I saw from time to time that some discussion was needed when a Farang shows his/her driving license (sometimes they said no way, or we need the yellow tabian baan as well, or even your work permit...)...

The emerald pool is not part of a national park but a natural reserve, i.e paying the entrance fee to this attraction doesn't allow you to visit other attractions for free on the same day (ie: the hot waterfall located 5 miles away, hopefully this one is much cheaper : between 20 and 50 bahts, I don't remember the exact fee)

Or Russian? Absolutely, certainly not typically Thai looking, not even for a potential movie star.

After the report spread online, Vutthipong Chusangrach, chief of the Khaopra Bangkhram Wildlife Sanctuary, Krabi, said the gatekeeper had to charge him 200 baht despite his argument that he was Thai because he "refused to show his identification card but showed his driver's licence instead".

"Although he has been living in Thailand for a long time, he is not a Thai national. We have to charge him the foreigners’ rate - no exceptions. The gatekeeper was just following regulations and was not being avaricious," Mr Vutthipong explained.
It's all crystal or Emerald clear now.

Overcharging foreigners isn't just a Thai thing.
The entry fees of Taj Mahal are as following:

    20 per person Domestic/Indian

    750 per person For Foreigners

510 per person Citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC Countries

No entry fee for children below the age of 15 years (both Domestic and Foreigner)

I look at it more as undercharging the impoverished masses so all residents get to see their own countries treasures.

Go to the Taj Mahal and look in the car-park. It's full of Mercs etc. Yet theses (impoverished?) owners only pay the basic fee.

so what, they should tier their pricing based on income level?

Thats a poor argument, that two tiered pricing is there so the significantly less well off than tourists population still get to see the sites. There are nice cars in the Taj Mahal means poor Indians dont visit the site?

Or should we just charge a nominal fee to tourists of less than $1 to enter major tourist attractions just so they are not treated unfairly compared to the local peasantry?

No. It should be a fixed price so all pay the same. Example being, as when traveling on a bus or train.

    It's not racist.

It's ironic that people who look down on Thais as less than/sub-human keep peddling that fallacy though.

    It's not racist.
it is treating people differently according to their race, their nationality and their appearance.
