The unpaid debt was 15,000 baht, food and beverages
Kiwis busted in Thailand for 2-year-old unpaid restaurant bill - World - NZ Herald NewsThe warrant alleged the father and son had walked out of the Blue Marine Resort and Spa without paying a 15,000 baht food and beverage bill - almost $NZD660.
Patong Police Captain Yingyong Chuoykij told the paper that both sides preferred to negotiate than go to a court.
"The settlement was made yesterday evening. The two men agreed to pay the bill, while the resort's representative agreed to drop the charges after the money was received."
Once the bill was settled, the pair were released.
Mr Chuoykij said the case was not serious.

The above article says they "settled" the so called dispute, but one might think the New Zealand media could have at least given 2 of their citizens the decency and courtesy of using the word "allegedly" unpaid to describe the restaurant bill? The settled part means nothing since they would obviously pay it whether of not they owed it to get out of jail.
One thing we can agree on is that the article of PhuketWan (the OP) was poorly researched and misleading. The article from the NZ Herald talks about a "a 15,000 baht food and beverage bill". One could imagine they met a couple of hookers, took them back to the hotel, ordered room service including champagne and expensive liquors. The next morning they sobered up, realized they went totally overboard and decided to make a discrete exit thinking they will probably never come back. Totally possible.
No, the settled part means they've admitted guilt.Originally Posted by BobR

if the hotel didnt take a credit card imprint or a deposit when they checked in then they were asking for trouble.
if the kiwis did a runner then they deserve to be in the situation they now find themselves in.
