Actually, as I understand it, Chuwit converted to Christianity some time ago.

He is, despite all that has happened, an interesting chap.....well, for a Thai, that is.

At least he is actually doing some time in jail, that's uncommon !
I think the jail time is deseved, no matter he was the owner of the land plot, he had no right to hire thugs to forcibly move the people occupying the space (even more if these people had paid a rent agreed with the owner)...

Maybe this extreme move is the results of a very slow justice system, that takes so much time to deliver the judgements...

But that doesn't mean all he did afterwards was crap, I remember that he gave out some nice tips on corruption (large gambling den in Bangkok for example), his stance was that he know much about corruption by excperience so he's quite capable of detecting and exposing the cases...

Chuwit expected to be released from prison on Friday

Former Rak Thailand Party leader Chuwit Kamolvisit is among the first group of prisoners to be released from prisons on Friday after they were granted Royal pardon on the occasion of the accession to the throne of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

An informed source close to the Corrections Department said that over 10,000 prisoners in Bangkok’s eight prisons, including Chuwit, would be released.

Mr Chutwit was sentenced by the Supreme Court to two years imprisonment on January 28 over the demolition of beer bars on Sukhumvit Road several years ago.

Chuwit vows never to return to politics

Former Rak Prathet Thai (Love Thailand) party leader Chuwit Kamolvisit cannounced after his release from prison on Friday afternoon that he would definitely not return to politics “because I do not want to be in prison again”.

The former Bangkok MP was among 30,000 prisoners released from prisons throughout the country on Friday after a Royal pardon from His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun on the occasion of his accession to the throne.

Chuwit was hugged by one of his daughters when he stepped out of the prison’s gate and was mobbed by a small army of reporters who had been waiting for him. He told the media that he felt very grateful to HM the King for his release and said the first thing he wanted to do was to go back home to swim.

He added that he would fly to the United States on Saturday to be with a daughter on the occasion of her graduation ceremony.

Chuwit said he had not thought about what to do following his release, but he announced that he would not return to politics because he didn’t want to go back to prison again. “Nothing is happier than being free”, he said philosophically.

Recalling his life behind bars, the former flamboyant politician said he felt guilty all the time and accepted his past mistakes. And for that, he said he devoted himself by working as a handy man at the prison’s hospital.

“I have seen a lot of things there and have collected about 80 bodies,” he recalled.

Chuwit was sentenced by the Supreme Court to two years imprisonment for his involvement in the demolition of several beer bars located on Sukhumvit Soi 10 on January 26, 2003.

Chuwit's garden of repentance will I suspect now become a rather nice hotel or condo in due course. I always suspected it was simply a wheeze to deflect criticism of, and punishment for, his crimes that night.
Not entirely insignificant that this garden was closed for renovations during his term of incarceration and one may well see the next development under way quite soon.

The land must be worth a fortune.
