Cambodia's real estate tycoon Sok Bun, wanted by police for allegedly beating a local TV personality, was arrested on Saturday morning at Phnom Penh International Airport and sent to Prey Sar prison, The Phnom Penh Post reported.
Bun had been on the run since video film of him beating former TV show hostess Ek Socheata, better known as Ms Sasa, on July 2 at Higashiyama restaurant in Phnom Penh.
The Phnom Penh Municipality Court issued a warrant for him and his bodyguard. Bun was said to have fled abroad, initially to Singapore, after the footage of the July 2 incident began circulating on the internet.
Brig Gen Sok Khemarin, chief of the Ministry of Interior’s penal police department, said the former head of the Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association was arrested on arrival and later sent to the court. After a questioning session at the court, Bun was sent to Prey Sar prison to await trial.
On Friday, Socheata’s friend whom Bun attempted to take advantage of in the video, a Japanese national who has since fled the country, filed a separate police complaint accusing Bun of rape in an earlier incident.
According to court documents, Bun stands charged with “intentional violence with aggravating circumstances” under article 217 of the penal code. If found guilty, he would be liable to a prison term of two to five years.
Bun’s bodyguard, who Socheata claims pulled the trigger of his pistol only for it to fail to discharge, has been charged with attempted murder and remains at large.
