Bangkok railway station or locally called "Hua Lampong" will not serve as a railway station but merely a railway museum under a four-year renovation plan to be undertaken by the State Railway of Thailand.
This was revealed yesterday by the SRT governor Wutthichart Kalayanamitr after celebrating the 99th year anniversary of the Bangkok station.
He said Hua Lampong will be renovated to reminisce the old time atmosphere during its glory.
In the renovation scheme, SRT will cooperate with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and nongovernmental organisations to regulate underprivileged people sheltering at the station and its vicinities, and also strayed dogs and cats wandering at the station.
He said he would make Hua Lampong clean, beautiful and safe and make it to represent the corporate image of the SRT.
It also will be turned a tourist attraction as the renovation meant not only to make it a railway museum, but also to include the improvement of its landscapes around the station to reminisce the railway station in the old times with old time activities to be held throughout the year, he said.
The central railway service at Hua Lampong will then be relocated to Bang Sue station within four years or by 2019.
He said 80-90% of trains will be relocated to the new central railway station at Bang Sue, with the remaining 10-20% of old time trains will still be put in service to serve tourists from Hua Lampong to adjacent stations.
He also disclosed that SRT will soon renovate the Chitralada railway station to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakkri Sirindhorn who will make a train trip to Kanchanaburi province.
