TV presenter Sorayuth Suthassanachinda and four others on Monday pleaded innocent to charges they embezzled 138 million baht from state-run Mcot Plc.

In January, public prosecutors charged former Mcot staffer Pichapa Iamsa-ard; Mr Sorayuth; former directors in his Rai Som Co Angkhana Watthanamongkholsilp and Sukanya sae Lim; and Rai Som employee Montha Theeradet. On Monday, they were summoned to enter their pleas and review evidence against them.

Mrs Pichapa was accused of receiving bribes from Rai Som to conceal 17 instances in which advertising during Mr Sorayuth's Khui Khui Khao news programme exceeded its allocated time slots between Feb 4, 2005 and April 28, 2006. The overages would have cost the company 138 million baht.

The former Mcot staffer was accused of receiving 658,996 baht from the four other defendants. All five denied the charges.

Public prosecutors have readied 19 witnesses, including former and current Mcot employees and executives.

Mrs Pichapa told the court she had not used correction fluid to erase any records on the commercials and she had received six cheques from the company for her services to arrange queues of ads. She has two witnesses: herself and an Mcot employee who was her supervisor.

Miss Angkhana and Miss Sukanya denied they had assigned anyone to arrange for additional advertising or had bribed Mrs Pichapa erase any evidence of them.

Mr Sorayuth told the court he had neither known Mrs Pichapa nor had anyone conceal excessive advertising minutes. He said he had issued the six cheques to pay for "coordination services". The three directors of the company have 25 witnesses. Miss Montha, the other defendant, echoed Mr Sorayuth about the six cheques and has eight witnesses.

The court set prosecutors' witness examination on Sept 17-18 and 29-30, with defence witnesses testifying Oct 2, 8, 28 and 30. Mr Sorayuth told reporters he would appear at all court dates.

Sorayuth sentenced to serve 13 years by criminal court

The Criminal Court today sentenced well-known Channel 3’s TV host Sorayuth Suthassanachinda to 13 years and four months in prison after finding him guilty in cheating the state-owned MCOT Plc of over 138 million baht in advertising revenue in 2005 and 2006.

The charges were filed by the National Anti Corruption Commission against the TV host and his Rai Som company, Mrs Pichapa Iamsa-ard, an MCOT employee, and Montha Theeradet, an employee of Rai Som Co.

Personally, I always like him and the numerous programs that he hosted/anchored...almost looked upon as a popular icon all around.
Yet, if one gets caught with their hands in the cookie bin and a thieving cvnt, then have to pay the penalty.

I'd be curious to know what prison locale he'd be serving.

Bet he only serves 4-5 years, if that.
He's well connected.

Appeal etc. Doubtful he will do his time and perhaps partial restitution may assist in securing a more acceptable resolution

The news talk programme Rueng Den Yen Nee (The Top Story This Evening), hosted by Sorayuth, was dropped Monday evening.

News programmes produced by Rai Som Co -- Rueng Lao Chao Nee (Monday-Friday), and Rueng Lao Sao Arthit on Saturday and Sunday -- will continue to be broadcast as usual, although it is up to Rai Som to decide whether to change the TV show host, Isara News quoted Channel 3 management as saying.

Quite simply, the Thai have no moral compass approximating to decency in any accepted sense of the word.

Probably explains why prostitution in Thailand is illegal but there are hundreds of brothels everywhere and thousands of whores.

Hypocrisy is key to everything that happens here.

On Amarin channel 34 they have been discussing the hypocrisy of him still working, many people are on his case at the moment for this.

I think Channel 3 needs a good shafting for still letting him go to air and still paying him.

But being Hi-So he will just power on, line the right pockets and all's good.
