Had this happen to me. I was with a Duth couple and their infant son when driver pulled over at tollway and demanded 500 b instead of meter otherwise get out of cab.

With the baby you have no choice......

Scum. Hopefully Grab and Uber will kill them all off.

The cabbie used the tollway but failed to take the exit near Rama IV Road. He did not want to take responsibility and told the passengers to get out of the vehicle in the middle of the tollway.
well, i could rant on about the stupidity, selfishness, lack of responsibility and total absence of moral fibre of the average low end thai, but whats the point.

leaving a young couple with their baby stranded on an elevated freeway in 38C heat because of his own errors of navigation certainly plumbs new depths of hatefulness and irresponsibility, even for a thai cab driver.

Theoretically, at least, this sounds like a crime. Worth an angry missive to TripAdvisor, surely.

If it does stay in the media for a while, he will be hunted down for 'making Thailand look bad'.

As for the 2 1/2 farangs left stranded with all their bags in 38 degree heat, no one will give a shit about.

The incident is bizarre. How did the tourists know he didn't take the right exit? If the driver screwed up all he had to do was to return taking the next exit and double back. What responsibility did he not wish to take? An extra 20 bt on the clock?

I think it must be something else. Possibly, the child took a dump and the driver couldn't take it.

Makes no sense at all. And why would anyone get out in the middle of a motorway. If I were with the wingman and an infant child, and our impedimenta, I'd sooner rip his throat out than quit. Sometimes, you just have to stand up for yourselves.

Likely GPS on a smart phone.

They were possibly telling the Thai which way to go (innocently enough) while tracking the route on their iPhone, without realizing that the ego of the Thai, with the mental and emotional age of a young child, would be enraged to the point of hacking them to death with a samurai sword for doing so.

When he didn't understand and missed the turn off and they dared to raise their voices and gesticulate his error, it all likely came too much for the delicate little retard to take.

Maybe so...You would have to face the consequences, as well...And who knows how it would turn out...

A civilized person should handle the situation in a civilized manner...Now, let's define the key word here...

Na, it wasn't any thing else, the driver was being a prick- because he could and there is little down side.

Thai babies shit their pants too, but fuck with a Thai and they usually want some payback.

I would give the Thai apologists unlimited, free International news coverage to 'explain how there was 'more to the story' when tourists are fucked over.

Tourists are easy marks and the system is rigged against them...

Perhaps he wanted to take them to a "better" hotel than the "no good" one they'd already booked and paid for, yes. Or, he offered to take them with their baby for a massage with "sexy" girl, "no pay first have look".

Been teaching 8 years, Thai males are mostly nice normal children until about age 11- 12. Almost overnight between 5th and 6th grades they develop that silly attitude of false superiority, arrogance and ignorance they are proud of.

its pretty big news in Thai social media too. all on the family side and blaming the taxi. they were picked up from swampy so trying to trace the driver, apparently.

^Much outrage from Thais on that Facebook page. My wife looked over my shoulder and got hopping mad herself. God help that taxi driver if she gets a hold of him.

Imagine what the Bangkok taxi situation would be like with no meters nor A/C? It wasn't all that long ago that this poor farang would have to hide behind the proverbial telephone pole while the missus would hail the taxi.

Never was turffed-out of any cabs though.

Just arriving from a long flight and piling into a taxi and deciphering a route on a smartphone which correlates with the spaghetti reality of exiting the right tollway slip road is simply not credible for what I would assume was a relative stranger to Bangkok.
There has to be something else that triggered the driver's actions in which he had evidently forsaken a fare for which he had queued to get.

Anyone using a Satnav in, say,London whose first language is English still makes errors in navigating one way routes etc. They're not infallible and indicating a different direction doesn't necessarily mean the wrong route.

Nah, your explanation is simply not feasible.

I mean.. don't go backpacking with a baby... if you've had a baby your life is over and it's time to grow up yourself. Bringing a guitar says it all as well.

its more than feasible to think they were using sat nav and who is to say they were not regular visitors to bangkok. even as newbie backpackers, the reputation of bangkok cabbies for cheating their customers is well publicised and they could well have been following the route on their phone.

whilst most thai taxi drivers do their job in a reasonably efficient manner, there are many who should not be doing that job, from the ones working without a permit using their friends cab for the day to the frankly psychopathic brigade who can and do fly off the handle with little or no provocation.

their driving, especially on expressways, can be frightening and especially so for a young couple with a small child on their first visit, especially if the journey to their departure airport had been in a country where the taxi service is more civilised.

think of them, sitting unbelted behind an unshaven wide eyed chilli breathed loon with his foot to the floor, driving one handed whilst arguing with his wife on his mobile, the view ahead obscured by a winsdcreen covered with stickers and a curtain of dangling beads, baubles, and buddhas, this nightmare accompanied by a high decibel soundtrack of that discordant squawking cacophony they all blast out of their radios mixed with the straining shrieking engine and exhaust.

the wife would have complained, the husband would have complained, the baby would have cried and the taxi driver wouldnt have given a fuck. maybe showed them the crowbar he keeps under the seat.

its his cab, and his passengers can like it or lump it. the drivers rationale is "i'm a thai, in thailand, they are foreigners, lesser beings, who do they think they are, i dont need this aggro, OI YOU LOT, GET OUT, NOW"

in spite of the heat and danger standing on the expressway, they were probably relieved to be out of the cab.
