Thread: CPB proposes to set minimum age for motorcyclists & pillion riders

BANGKOK, 11 March 2015 (NNT) – In its latest bid to reduce the number of road casualties, the Consumer Protection Board (CPB) is preparing to tighten safety rules and regulations for motorcyclists and pillion passengers.

The Consumer Protection Board is planning to push ahead with the issuance of safety precaution labels for motorcycles to remind motorcyclists and passengers to wear helmets before taking a ride. The labels must be placed in the most visible position.

The CPB will in addition propose to ban children under the age of six from riding pillion, and children aged below 15 from driving a motorcycle. The idea has been initiated in response to recent statistics, which indicated a growing number of motorcycle casualties among youth.

According to statistics, dozing off while riding on a pillion is the main cause of motorcycle accidents among passengers of young age. Around 10 percent of the accidents are fatal. -

The police don't/didn't enforce the old law.

when in Thailand I live near a school, the amount of reckless, 4 up, no crash helmet bikes are everywhere, road safety has to start at a young age.

The police in Pattaya are now checking Thai driver licenses to see if you have the motorcycle driver authorization. (fine 400 baht if you just have the 'private car' authorization)

So if you have the Thai five-year driver license how do you get the motorcycle option added?

Hopefully, you don't have to show up with that whole checklist of items that you needed to get the 'private car' license.

Separate licence. Separate test.

It's not just women carrying infants on motorcycles that are being driven by their boyfriends/husbands, it's that so many actually ride fast and aggressively with a baby whose age would be measured in weeks on the bike. One more sight I've seen here too many times. You cannot legislate against pure stupidity.

I was doing a tour and went through a rural town just after the local highschool closed. Was unbelievable. About 1000 scooters, each being driven by a child, with 2-3 other children along for the ride. No helmets. Was like those crabs that take over an island every mating season. 3:30pm and the whole town was taken over by 1000 of them.

Parents, teachers, police??? yeah right, bunch of braindead simpletons the lot of them.

Though I think there were a few police officers in the middle of the road directing them out.

They are already, on public roads at least, as they are under the minimum age required to obtain a driving license.

I never had to at Nong Khai licence test station , just did the comical theory things , when they looked at the back of my UK licence they even asked me if I wanted all categories of lorries as well .

yes 2 separate licences , but granted with no probs

If you have no foriegn licence - as i don't - then you do the seperate tests.

Yup, one passed me not long ago, one kid on the back, one sprawled out over the gas tank, I was waiting at the red light, he went through it.

Perhaps all Thais could be taken in by real countries until the age of seven, then shipped back.

I am, but the DVLC are keeping my licence after a collision with a parked double decker bus in Manchester.
