AN Australian* man has been arrested in the Philippines over the murder of a Filipina teenager he met on the internet after her body was found in a motel room.
THE body of 17-year-old Alona Alvarez was found by employees at a motel in the southern city of Dipolog, in the Central Visaya region, on January 30.
Tourist Ali Ali, 42, confessed to killing the teenager in self-defence, saying his mind went blank, police said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is understood to be providing consular assistance to an Australian man in connection with the incident.
The pair had met in Dipolog for the first time two days before the murder after talking online. Police said Ali flew to the Philippines to meet Alvarez.
"Her face was so unrecognisable and horribly disfigured, the mortician had a hard time," police investigator Ronald Dingas said.
"She suffered a very brutal death. It's too much."
Alvarez had deep head wounds, had lost most of her teeth, and suffered a brain haemorrhage which ultimately led to her death by acute respiratory failure, Dingas said, citing a police autopsy.
She was naked, and investigators also found sex toys and marijuana in the room.
Motel staff told police the Australian had checked into the room with Alvarez two days earlier, Dingas said.
Ali was arrested on Sunday in the city of Dumaguete, 75 kilometres away from Dipolog, Dumaguete police chief Superintendent James Gofoth told AFP.
The suspect, his knuckles heavily bruised, told police he attacked Alvarez after the victim bit his penis, Gofoth added.
"He said he did it out of self-defence. He said his mind went blank," Gofoth said.
"He was planning to escape to Manila."
Ali was brought back to Dipolog where police filed a murder complaint against him before the local state prosecutor.
He faces a 40-year prison term if found guilty. A court appearance has not been scheduled.

A BRUTAL Victorian criminal has been arrested over the murder of a teenage girl in the Philippines.

Ali Ali, 41, is in custody over the violent death of a 17-year-old girl in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, last Friday.

Her naked and bleeding body was found in a pension house last Friday and Ali was arrested later that night.

Ali was released from prison within the past two years.

At the time, he was a suspect in the 2011 fatal bashing of Colin Johnson at Fulham Prison in Gippsland.

Ali had been in custody over the horrific bashing of Melbourne Custody Centre inmate Michael Tully in 1999.

Mr Tully, who was in custody for minor crimes, suffered severe brain damage when his head was stomped on by Ali.

He died of heart failure three years later but Ali could not be charged over the death because of the time elapsed between the attack and Mr Tully dying.

Jail for act of 'pure violence'
An infamous prisoner without a shred of remorse was today jailed - for a third time - for one of the most brutal and cowardly assaults inflicted in a Victorian jail.

Ali Ali's attack on an inmate with schizophrenia in 1999 is regarded as one of the state's worst assaults in a case notorious in legal circles.

A Supreme Court judge this morning said Ali's vicious and brazen attack on Michael Tully, who she described as a "simple and vulnerable man", was totally unprovoked and unwarranted.

A number of prisoners who witnessed the incident - and who, in the three trials, bravely broke the code of prison silence to testify for the prosecution - said Ali repeatedly stomped on Mr Tully's head as he rested on a concrete bench in the Melbourne Custody Centre.

Justice Elizabeth Curtain told Ali in her sentencing remarks he had felt confident he could assault Mr Tully with "impunity and without repercussions".

But she said the reality was "your assault was so extreme even experienced criminals were sickened by your conduct" and gave evidence to see justice done.

Ali was twice found guilty by juries of intentionally causing serious injury to Mr Tully and twice granted retrials on appeal for errors of law.

In May this year, a third jury took 47 minutes to convict him of what prosecutors Mark Dean, SC, and Marcus Dempsey described as an unprovoked attack in the "worst category" of its type.

Once regarded as one of Victoria's most hated and feared prisoners, Ali, 35, was led from the Supreme Court this morning convinced he was the one who has suffered an injustice.

I'm sure that word will be out amongst the Filipino prison population..

It is a bit odd that Oz don't deny passports to felons.
They deny visas to felon who wan't to come in....Mayweather was denied a visa the other day due to his spousal abuse convictions.

I know this guy from Barwon prison, can't remember that much about him, just another sociopath in sociopath central.
He may well have been on the rounds arranging business of the drugs type, the sadism is just a side line hobby.

Everyone knows these types never get better, always a danger, but they let them out to kill again.
System is broken, can't remember over the years how many I dealt with that were released and raped and killed again.

Don't think the system has changed, but Feds did not have access to state records on the spot, states do not have access to other state data bases, not the FBI.

Apply for a passport, no federal record, unless they have doubts or intel, you are on your way.

Just look at the surrogate baby case recently, he was on the national child sex offender register, still got a passport and was not stopped from flying to Thailand.
