I guess we should ask. Why the one technician? Who was he/she and why?
Tried to reboot the flight controls in mid flight?

I just read AirAsia has up until now an impeccable safety record , It seems now that will change ,itis a shame as they are good to travel on and I shall continue to do so.

Current satellite photo from Japan Meteorological Agency. Looks like bad weather along the whole route. Surabaya origin approximately at green square. Intended destination Singapore approximately at pink square. Time report indicates the area of last contact between Belitung island and Borneo shown by the red circle.

A MASSIVE air and sea search and rescue operation has been launched to find a missing AirAsia passenger jet, which lost contact with air officials off the coast of Java. The passenger jet, carrying 162 people, was travelling between the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore and was due to land at Changi Airport at 11.30am AEDT.

Early reports from local media suggest a plane has crashed east of Belitung Island in the Java Sea, but there is no confirmation that the stricken aircraft is Flight QZ8501

No other aircrafts reported missing in the area so no need for a confirmation, if a plane has crashed there then we can be sure which plane it was.

AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24 (Surabaya LT) this morning. The flight took off from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya at 0535hours.

The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC. There were two pilots, four flight attendants and one engineer on board.

The captain in command had a total of 6,100 flying hours and the first officer a total of 2,275 flying hours

There were 155 passengers on board, with 138 adults, 16 children and 1 infant. Also on board were 2 pilots and 5 cabin crew.

Nationalities of passengers and crew onboard are as below:
    1 Singapore
    1 Malaysia
    1 France
    3 South Korean
    156 Indonesia

At this time, search and rescue operations are being conducted under the guidance of The Indonesia of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). AirAsia Indonesia is cooperating fully and assisting the investigation in every possible way.

The aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to enroute weather before communication with the aircraft was lost while it was still under the control of the Indonesian Air Traffic Control (ATC).

The aircraft had undergone its last scheduled maintenance on 16 November 2014.

AirAsia has established an Emergency Call Centre that is available for family or friends of those who may have been on board the aircraft. The number is: +622129850801.

AirAsia will release further information as soon as it becomes available. Updated information will also be posted on the AirAsia website, AirAsia | Budget Airline | Fly from Singapore to Bangkok, Bali, Tokyo, Sydney and more.

Airborne at 5:20am. Lost contact at 6:17am. Lots of time to reach cruising altitude of 35000 ft+ Would that not put it well above thunderstorm activity? This kind of weather can be pretty hazardous at lower altitudes, especially for take -off and landing, but not usually at higher altitudes??

Thunderstorms, particularly those around Indonesia, can exceed 65,000 feet in height. Given choices, most pilots try to go round them. From the weather maps the entire region is covered in cloud and this year's NE monsoon is very intense indeed as evidenced by the flooding in peninsula Malaysia.
Lightning strikes, updrafts, downdrafts........also, the higher you are in a thunderstorm the worse it is.

The plane was at 32,000ft when the captain radio'd through for the flight deviation, he wanted to go up to 38,000ft to get above the clouds.
