Prayut Orders 'Intensive Civic Education' for Students

    Bangkok Post
    November 25, 2014
    Writer: Lamphai Intathep

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday asked the permanent secretary for education to monitor how students express their political views following the three-finger protest staged against him by university students last week.

Suthasri Wongsamarn, the education permanent secretary, said Gen Prayut suggested the ministry teach both school and university students about citizenship duties in civic education classes.

Last Wednesday five Khon Kaen University students staged a three-finger salute protest in front of Gen Prayut as he spoke in the province. The next day a Bangkok University student also adopted the same gesture taken from The Hunger Games film franchise at the premier of a sequel. The salute has become a symbol of opposition to the May 22 coup d'etat.

Gen Prayut raised the subject with Ms Suthasri at a permanent secretary-level meeting at the Interior Ministry. Ms Suthasri said she had received calls from several people asking her to pay more attention to students' behaviour following the three-finger protests.

"No one has prohibited students from expressing opposing political views, but they must take into account appropriateness and propriety," Ms Suthasri said.

"In Thai tradition, it is improper to interrupt an adult while he is speaking. Today's youngsters think fast and act quickly. Personally, I think we should look at what has been achieved, and not how this government came to power," she added.

She said students must know not only their rights and what democracy is but also respect the rights of others.

The Office of the Higher Education Commission is keeping an eye on university students and helping correct improper behaviour and opinions, she said.

The ministry's Semarak Centres, dedicated to helping with youth-related problems, will also watch how students express themselves politically.

Students to Get Forums to Air Views

Prayut tells NRC to Allow Students to Offer Proposals for National Reform

The government will set up forums to allow students to express their views on reform after intelligence units learned that more anti-coup and anti-government protests are being planned, PM's Office Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana said yesterday.

Suwaphan said some protesters had good intentions, but some may have a hidden agenda, ulterior or political motives.

In a move to prevent rallies, he said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the National Reform Council (NRC) and the King's Prajadhipok Institute to allow students to participate in the reform process by expressing their views and knowledge.

He said it was not necessary to relax any rules, because the NRC is able to work under special regulations. The format of the forum for students to air their opinions will be made public in a few days.

Suwapan added that the Council of State was reviewing the Gathering of People at Public Places Bill after the Cabinet accepted it in principle. He said once this bill is passed, law enforcers may have legal measures to deal with protests and other special laws may not be necessary.

    'People Not Happy'

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who also serves as defence minister, moved yesterday to deter anti-coup protesters from staging further protests, citing several opinion surveys that show most people disapprove of anti-coup protests.

A Dusit Poll found that most people disagreed with the five Khon Kaen University students' anti-coup gesture before Prayut last week. Of 1,302 respondents, 79 per cent believed the students should not have staged the protest, as the national political situation is not totally calm.

Prawit, meanwhile, called on those who want to stage protests to give the government a year to ease the political divide and bring about national reconciliation. "We only ask for one year to achieve our mission," he said.

The problem with tradition is that the ruddy thing keeps updating itself. Todays novelty is tomorrows tradition.

Gen Prayut suggested the ministry teach both school and university students about citizenship duties in civic education classes.
The Thai school curriculum already covers citizenship and civic education so those university students will have already been 'taught' it. Rehashing the same stuff at university level won't make the slightest bit of difference to what the students believe or practise themselves.

Personally, I think we should look at what has been achieved, and not how this government came to power," she [Ms Suthasri] added.
Indeed. We all know how this government came to power. A military coup. Perhaps Ms Suthasri can inform us of what the current government has achieved so far.

    Well, sure...
    Quite understood.
Only because they have the blessing to continue on. As this has always been the agenda within the influential circles.

Read up and understand real contemporary Thai history and the full picture will come into focus better.

I suggest Prey-Youth is a very poor example...He needs to be re-educated, not the others...

Thailand’s New Prime Minister Believes in Feng Shui, Holy Water, and Black Magic
September 9, 2014 by Hemant Mehta

Prayuth Chan-ocha (below), the Thai army officer who led a military coup against the government earlier this year, handpicked his legislature, and was (surprise!) unanimously chosen by them to be the country’s new Prime Minister last month, isn’t exactly a great role model.

Stepping away from how he obtained office, his belief in superstitious bullshit makes U.S. politicians seem almost secular in comparison:

Like many politicians and generals before him, Prayuth believes in spiritualism and divination and on Monday members of his entourage were seen carrying Buddha statues and religious idols thought to bring luck in to Government House.
But his beliefs go beyond conventional religion, and last week, Prayuth told an audience of dousing himself from head to toe in holy water as his enemies had tried to curse him.

Furniture in Prayuth’s designated office has been arranged according to the principles of feng shui, a Chinese form of geomancy or belief that the universe is made up of five elements — earth, water, fire, wood and metal.
“Prayuth’s work table has been placed in the east of the work room as this is thought to aid quick solutions,” a prime ministerial aide, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to media, told Reuters.

Good luck, Thailand. In everything. You’re going to need it.

I seriously doubt you hear any orders from above mere speculation on your part.

I see lots of happy people in my area, not much has changed at all, except the price of land has gone up substantially.

If it acts like a criminal, walks like a criminal and talks like a criminal...

If it acts like a dictator, walks like a dictator and talks like a dictator...

If it acts like a mentally ill lunatic, walks like a mentally ill lunatic and talks like a mentally ill lunatic...

The list goes on, but 'it' is still not a Prime Minister no matter how much you blindly follow framed discourse...

Actually I don't follow blindly anything, and I don't agree with all the politics in Thailand, just pointing out whether you like, or agree with it he is carrying out all things as the prime minister, thus for all intents and purposes he is the prime minister, and as foreigners there is nothing you, I ,or anybody ales on this forum can do about it.
I suppose you think previous prime minsters didn't fit the criteria you listed above.

And people who have a choice (obviously many don't) still choose to stick their kids through the Thai 'education' system.

I have a niece, who will receive her doctorate in chemistry in July, Thai school system through grade 12

Nephew just had his these accepted for his masters in physics, Thai school system through grade 12

The possibilities are there, most kids just don't take advantage.

    Seems ok to me.

I don't doubt the possibilities are there and some kids do well, but for not so well off farangs who can't afford international or decent private schools in Thailand, I don't understand how they would subject their kids to the Thai system as opposed to returning to the West but as always each to their own.

    Quite so Betty.

Still with the reformers now thinking about adopting something like the German constitution , we can look forward to happier times again when we can call him
the Fuhrer with his renamed parliament building ......the Ricestag.
