Car Explodes In Phetchaburi Rail Crossing Accident, Trains Halted

    Phetchaburi-Cha-Am-Hua Hin Train Services Suspended

    Bangkok Post
    October 28, 2014
    Writer: Online Reporters

Two people were killed when their car was hit by a passenger train at a railway crossing in Phetchaburi province on Tuesdasy.

Train No 261 left Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan and was heading to Bangkok when it hit the Songkhla-registered Toyota Camry carrying two passengers at a railway crossing with no barriers between Khao Tamone station and Phetchaburi station about 1pm.

The car exploded and it and the locomotive were engulfed in flames following the collision, local rescuers who put out the fire said.

Two charred bodies were found in the burned car. The locomotive jumped the track. No one on the train was injured. The line was blocked by the accident. Work crews were clearing the track.

The identities of the people in the car were unknown

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said Phetchaburi-Cha-am-Hua Hin train services had been suspended.

I always slow down at a crossing, even if it has got barriers.

They do not have the gumption to think that there may be a train coming. I have little sympathy for them. Just the same as running red lights.

Many Thais lack spacial awareness. Combining that with their mobile infatuation will always make for a bad recipe for accidents.

According a news item a few days ago, a guy interviewed later at the crash scene said that he was talking to one of the occupants of the car on the phone and he heard the trains horn blowing then silence. I didn't catch whether it was the driver or passenger he was talking to.

On the Thai TV news last evening there was a video of the accident as it happened. Must have been a cctv clip. The SUV just cruised across the tracks directly into the path of the train and was broadsided. It disappeared as the train rushed past. I doubt that the occupants ever realized what happened.

Thank goodness this sort of thing never happens in other countries.

You have to feel for the train drivers. They cannot stop even if they want to.

There are thousands of uncontrolled railway crossings in the world and probably just as many accidents.

    Even Indonesia has signs!

    Translation: Caution Railway Look Right-Left

There are also lots of crossings in the world without signs in rural areas.

It definitely was a black car in the video clip, so I think it was from the accident in the OP. I didn't have my eyeglasses on when I caught the news segment, so let's go with the Toyota Camry, not SUV.

    According to a Khaosod article:

The couple, Vittaya and Rojanawan Ratanam, were reportedly looking at a GPS [on] their mobile phone and did not realize the train was coming.
