Man, 75, conned and ditched by grandchild

    6 Oct 2014

A 75-year-old veteran soldier from Lop Buri travelled to Bangkok after his grand daughter told him her father had died and she needed help, but after they met and he gave her all his money she took him to Victory Monument and abandoned him. According to Facebook user Naruphon Pakdironnachit, he found Somnuk Sripaluk sitting alone and helpless on the pavement near Victory Monument on Sunday. “The grandfather quickly came to help her, but she just took all of his money and left him in the middle of the street," Mr Naruphon wrote on his social media account. He wrote that Mr Somnuk had only his identification card and veteran's ID card with him.

Most netizens responding on Facebook and Sanook.com said they felt sorry for the old man and strongly criticized the niece for mistreating him.

The woman is reported to be the daughter of Mr Somnuk's daughter.

Damn! can't sleep now because of that image.

Tried counting sheep, but got too excited.. so back online (1 am Kiwi time).

If there is any way to make a donation - I'd be happy to help.

It reminds me of what happened to the Ik people in the mountains of Northern Uganda :

There is no better or more heartbreaking example of the alienation of the human capacity to love than the story of the Ik tribe of Uganda. Colin Turnbull in his book Mountain People documents how Milton Obote nationalized traditional hunting lands as national park for European tourists, and prevented the Ik from hunting in their traditional hunting grounds. After a couple of generations of starvation conditions, the Ik, originally a cooperative, child loving tribe, became a group of selfish cruel people who don’t trust or help anybody. They would desert children at an early age and one story Turnbull tells is how after abandoning a baby to be eaten by wild animals the animals were hunted and eaten.

I think the Thai way of looking after their elderly is about to crash to a halt. Many oldies are going to be dumped penniless, IMO.

He looks confused, I wonder if he has dementia or something? Bit early to judge the grand kid just yet.

Lop Buri, is where he got the coach from, and the village did not know about his trip.
Is he back in the village?

Not all the same - mrs JZ's niece and nephew have recently given up lucrative jobs in the capital and returned to the home village to look after their ageing parents, and rejuvenate the farm.

Yes....a couple of publicized instances doesn't stain the whole tradition.

Thai people seem to look after their parents very well in most cases. I just posted this article because it shocked and saddened me so much.

The poor old bugger has apparently been abandoned by the rest of his family. I wonder if he has a mental health issue, perhaps dementia ? Or if it's some unfortunate medical condition, like body odour, or flatulence ? Perhaps the granddaughter has a mental problem ?

^ True mate, say what you want about Thais, but fair play - they do normally take care of their family members.

*Although, obviously not in this poor sod's case..

Do they know the kid did not have an accident? The netizens are about to launch into get massively once they get the name, and she might be laid up in hospital or dead.

Some people are beyond redemption. It appears to be a national past time here, the same could be said about the nation.

That's what I thought. He might have made up the story, or tell many similar tales.

His pic reminded me of this, tbh.

This would never have happened to a Farang Grandfather living in Thailand.

    Is this really news?

    1. Blogger met a befuddled old man in the street lost.
    2. Blogger did what you would always do in that situation. ... take an intrusive photo.
    3. Blogger then shares his sad story on the net.
    4. Netizens get up in arms about mythical evil grand daughter.

You're obliviously not familiar with the broader base of the culture, are ya?
