Thread: Man, 75, conned and ditched by grandchild

A 75-year-old veteran soldier from Lop Buri travelled to Bangkok after his grand daughter told him her father had died and she needed help, but after they met and he gave her all his money she took him to Victory Monument and abandoned him. According to Facebook user Naruphon Pakdironnachit, he found Somnuk Sripaluk sitting alone and helpless on the pavement near Victory Monument on Sunday. “The grandfather quickly came to help her, but she just took all of his money and left him in the middle of the street," Mr Naruphon wrote on his social media account. He wrote that Mr Somnuk had only his identification card and veteran's ID card with him.

Most netizens responding on Facebook and Sanook.com said they felt sorry for the old man and strongly criticized the niece for mistreating him.

The woman is reported to be the daughter of Mr Somnuk's daughter.

It reminds me of what happened to the Ik people in the mountains of Northern Uganda :

I think the Thai way of looking after their elderly is about to crash to a halt. Many oldies are going to be dumped penniless, IMO.

Not all the same - mrs JZ's niece and nephew have recently given up lucrative jobs in the capital and returned to the home village to look after their ageing parents, and rejuvenate the farm.

Yes....a couple of publicized instances doesn't stain the whole tradition.

Thai people seem to look after their parents very well in most cases. I just posted this article because it shocked and saddened me so much.

The poor old bugger has apparently been abandoned by the rest of his family. I wonder if he has a mental health issue, perhaps dementia ? Or if it's some unfortunate medical condition, like body odour, or flatulence ? Perhaps the granddaughter has a mental problem ?

^ True mate, say what you want about Thais, but fair play - they do normally take care of their family members.

Do they know the kid did not have an accident? The netizens are about to launch into get massively once they get the name, and she might be laid up in hospital or dead.

Some people are beyond redemption. It appears to be a national past time here, the same could be said about the nation.

That's what I thought. He might have made up the story, or tell many similar tales.

This would never have happened to a Farang Grandfather living in Thailand.
