    Food Outlet Standards Worsen

    Food Outlet Standards Worsen

    Bangkok Post
    August 15, 2014

Nearly 27% of Thai food outlets have failed to meet the requirements to win the “Clean Food Good Taste” quality sign from the Department of Health, compared with 16.4% in an earlier survey.

The latest survey conducted in 2012 found 73.4% of 163,125 restaurants and food vendors met the five conditions required to display the logo, said Pornthep Siriwanarangsun,. the department's director-general.

Those criteria cover the outlet's environment, food and taste, food storage, control of animals and insects, and food handling, he said at a seminar on Friday.

In an earlier survey, the department found 83.6% of 136,437 outlets met its quality standards. The programme began in 1999.

Dr Pornthep said common problems included food vendors' attire (such as lack of gloves or hair nets), the health of those who handle food, collection of garbage and leftover foods, and the covering of cooked foods.

The department this year introduced a new "Clean Food, Good Taste Plus" programme by selecting 74 establishments in 52 provinces, but in the end only 48 outlets from 38 provinces met the criteria.

Food centres that receive the accreditation must meet the five regular requirements and also pass six other tests. Those standards require vendors to use serving spoons, have wash basins for customers, provide safe and accessible toilets, use organic vegetables; train staff in hygienic food preparation, and make employees wear gloves.

Not encouraging to hear that standards are backsliding instead of improving. It also took a very long time between conducting the latest survey in 2012 and reporting on it in 2014. Seems like it is not being given a high enough priority given the health implications.

I can only speak from my own experiences and previously expressed concerns in a news thread on food cart practices about a general lack of sanitation.

    Just as I thought.
Sucked into information primed by the officialdom and conventional establishment, without the simple observations and knowledge that contradict any of the expected pablum repeated over and again [therefore it must be real].

Not enough money to pay for the criteria?

I'd agree with Thaimeme on this one, I've never been sick from a food cart in Thailand. But, I have been sick twice from buying meats at Foodland...

Since the Thai Ministry of Public Health's Department of Health performed the survey of Thai food outlets and is rating them as significantly worse than before, that should raise a red flag that there are problems.

Why would the Department of Health want to make Thai food servers look bad to the public if there is no substance to the findings?

Ah yes, this indicates a terribly unhygienic standard in most of the 3 mil 'food outlets' in Thailand.

Depends what you buy from them, having seen the pigs head prepared for cooking on the food carts would leave well alone.
Heads are cut up with cleavers on the street small chopping board, meat left on the ground after being cut up.Rats running round dogs and cats urinating defecating in close proximity.
Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas priests... more drink!

Are you inquiring rhetorically or just don't comprehend?
