Denpasar, Bali. A US man confessed in an Indonesian court on Thursday to killing his pregnant girlfriend’s mother, in a grisly case in which the victim’s battered body was found in an abandoned suitcase on the resort island of Bali.

Tommy Schaefer and Heather Mack, both from Chicago, are being tried separately and have been charged with premeditated murder in the death of Shiela von Wiese-Mack.

Schaefer has argued self-defense, telling the court Wiese-Mack attacked him in anger because she objected to the couple’s relationship.

“She squeezed my neck for about 20 to 30 seconds so I couldn’t see because my eyes were watering,” Schaefer said, describing through an interpreter the moments leading up to the murder. “She wanted to reach for a bowl but I reached it before she did. I couldn’t see so I just swung it.”

Mack, who is eight months pregnant, told a court hearing on Wednesday that Schaefer had killed her mother after she had threatened to kill the couple’s unborn baby, according to media.

Bali Police conducted a four-month investigation into the killing that included a re-enactment with the defendants at the luxury hotel where Wiese-Mack’s body was found.

Other evidence submitted to prosecutors included CCTV footage showing the couple speaking to a taxi driver after dropping the bloodied suitcase along with other luggage outside the hotel.

The pair could face the death penalty if found guilty of the murder, which took place in August of last year.

Then, while supposedly blinded by tears, he was able to see that she was gonna grab the fruit bowl, and beat her to it, then banged her head in.

Interesting comment coming from someone being strangled,.......it doesn't make yer eyes water.....

^ I hope he gets the death penalty for being both a murderer and such a bad liar he insulted the intelligence of the Court. Difficult to imagine a more evil crime.

There have been other cases (usually husbands taking their wives) on trips to 3rd World countries where they think law enforcement will be less competent than at home making the crime easier to get away with. Throwing them off cruise ships (planned in advance) has also happened.

    ^

Not easy to get away with ditching the Hand bag over board on a cruise ship.

    Cameras everywhere these days.

Anyway, this guy will surely get the Death penalty.

    Fair enough innit.

Heather Mack won’t face Bali death penalty for ‘sadistic’ murder of her mother

A TEENAGER and her boyfriend have escaped calls for them to be sentenced to death for their role in the “sadistic” Bali murder of her mother.
The couple, whose 15-day-old baby girl was brought to Denpasar District Court with them today, heard prosecutors call for them to be jailed for 15 and 18 years.
Both Heather Mack, 19 and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, had faced the death penalty for their roles in the premeditated murder of Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese Mack. Outside court Mack revealed the couple hopes to marry later this year.
Prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya told Judges that Mack should be jailed for 15 years for her role in assisting the “sadistic” murder of her wealthy mother.

Mr Wijaya said: “What the defendant did was sadistic and to her mother.” But he said Mack had confessed her guilt, was still young and had a newborn baby.
Fellow prosecutor Ni Luh Oka Ariani said that Mack’s boyfriend, Schaefer, and the father of her baby, deserved an 18-year sentence. Schaefer cried as the demand was delivered.
The sentence demand is a recommendation from the prosecutor about what sentence the couple deserve and the Judges can deliver a higher or lower sentence.
As the demand was read out, the American couple’s 15-day-old baby girl, who was brought to court with them, was minded by Schaefer’s mother, Kia Walker.
At just 15 days old tiny Stella Schaefer’s life is already in turmoil. She lives with her mother in a cell in the women’s block of Kerobokan prison.

US Couple Jailed Over 'Sadistic' Bali Suitcase Murder

    April 21, 2015
    By Gde Putra Wicaksana

Denpasar (Indonesia) (AFP) - A US man and his teenage girlfriend were given long jail terms Tuesday for the "sadistic" murder of her mother, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase outside a luxury hotel on Indonesia's Bali island.

Tommy Schaefer, 21, was found guilty of the premeditated murder of Sheila von Wiese Mack on the resort island and jailed for 18 years.

His girlfriend and the victim's daughter, 19-year-old Heather Mack, who was pregnant at the time of the crime, was found guilty of assisting in the murder and given a 10-year prison term.

The pair wept during separate sentencings as judges recounted harrowing details -- Schaefer beat the 62-year-old victim to death with a fruit bowl during a blazing row in the five-star resort, before the couple dumped the battered body in a taxi and fled.

The case sent shockwaves across the tropical paradise island, which welcomes millions of foreign visitors each year. Sentencing Schaefer, Judge Made Suweda told the court in the Balinese capital Denpasar that his actions had "disturbed the public and can be considered sadistic".

After being sentenced, Heather Mack -- clutching her baby girl, who was born last month -- told reporters outside the courtroom the verdict was "not fair". The pair's lawyers said they were deciding whether to appeal.

Schaefer's jail term was the same as that recommended by prosecutors. He escaped a death sentence, the maximum term for premeditated murder in Indonesia.

Heather Mack, who hid in the bathroom while Schaefer attacked her mother, was found guilty of the lesser charge of assisting in the murder. Prosecutors recommended a 15-year jail term but Suweda said judges decided to give her a lighter sentence so she could care for her baby.

HEATHER Mack, the teen jailed in Bali for her role in the grisly killing of her mother, has revealed she had a “complicated” relationship with the American academic.

The 19-year-old claimed she and 62-year-old Sheila von Wiese-Mack were entangled in a dysfunctional relationship in which they bonded over shoplifting and shared a bed.

“She never wanted to be separated from me and yet she also hated everything about me,” Mack told[at]People magazine[at]from Bali’s infamous Kerobokon prison. “It was complicated.”

In April, Mack and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Tommy Schaefer, were found guilty of[at]murdering the wealthy widow at a luxury hotel and stuffing her body in a suitcase in August last year.

Mack was sentenced to 10 years jail. She shares a prison cell with seven women and her six-month-old daughter Stella.

The Chicago-native said her relationship with her mother became strained following the death of her father, jazz musician James Mack. He left behind a $US1.5 million trust fund for his daughter.

“There was a lot of good in our relationship. I don’t know if I would describe us as friends, but we were close,” Mack said of her mum.

“I had a nice room, but if I ever tried to sleep in it, she couldn’t take it and she wouldn’t sleep. So I slept with her.”

The uni dropout also revealed she bonded with her mother over shoplifting expensive French cosmetics.

“We’d take thousands and thousands of dollars worth of makeup,” Mack said.

“She’d tell me that nobody would expect a kid to do that and have me steal it while she distracted the clerk ... I wanted to make her happy, so I’d just do it.”

As Mack got older, her fights with her mother intensified. The teen spent time in juvenile detention centres, with Sheila von Wiese-Mack reportedly calling police to their six-bedroom Illinois mansion 86 times over 10 years.

While Mack admitted to fighting with her mum, she said the glamorous socialite had a drinking problem and often provoked her.

“If I went to a psych ward, she would get frustrated within a couple days and couldn’t take being away from me, so she’d do everything she could to get me out. She didn’t want me to get help and she didn’t want to get help for herself,” Mack said.

“We had fights, but they weren’t one-sided. A lot of them were me blocking her from coming at me or her backing me into a corner and not letting me leave and go cool off.”

A family friend told People magazine that Sheila von Wiese-Mack would egg on her daughter by saying “hit me, hit me” repeatedly until she did so.

Throughout the interview, Mack insisted she did not kill her mother.

^ Sad the Australian media gives a killer a chance to malign the woman she killed from within prison. It was almost certainly nothing more than the bitch wanted the money, all of it and now.

Hopefully she and the asshole boyfriend will be prosecuted for conspiracy to commit murder (which is a separate crime under American law) once she is released from her far too lenient sentence and deported from Indonesia. The FBI, just within the last couple of weeks made another arrest in this case for conspiracy.

Another f--cked up Muslim legal system that gives the death penalty for drugs yet a mere 10 years for premeditated murder.

Bali suitcase murder: Heather Mack ‘acted alone’ in killing her mother in shock confession
    FEBRUARY 6, 20179:27AM

Heather Mack admits to killing her mother in Bali

AMERICAN woman Heather Mack has made a shocking confession on YouTube claiming that she acted alone in the grisly killing of her mother in Bali.

The 21 year old, who was convicted in 2015 for her role in helping murder her mother with her then-boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, posted a series of three videos on YouTube titled “Confession” on February 2.

Mack, from Chicago, was sentenced to 10 years in jail after she and Schaefer were found guilty of murdering the wealthy widow at a luxury Bali hotel and stuffing her body in a suitcase in August 2014.

In the video, Mack starts out by saying “the truth sets you free” and says she “doesn’t want to live in a lie anymore”.

Mack then admits she hatched a revenge plot to kill her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, as payback for her mother killing her father when she was a child.

“When I was 10, my mother killed my father in a hotel in Athens, Greece. Two weeks before I came to Bali, I found out that she killed my father and I made it up in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, in my blood, in the oxygen running through my body that I wanted to kill my mother,” she said in the video.

Mack was 10 when her father, acclaimed jazz composer James L. Mack, died of a pulmonary embolism during a family vacation in Greece in 2006, according to his obituary.

“First I asked Tommy Schaefer to find somebody to help me kill my Mum for $50,000. He said no. After that, I got this new savage idea in my head that I wanted to kill her in a hotel room, because she killed my father in a hotel room,” Mack said.

“We were going to Bali so I began to plot.”

At the trial, Schaefer testified that he delivered the fatal blow to Ms von Wiese-Mack with a metal handle of a fruit bowl.

However Mack has now claimed this was all part of the attempted cover-up, expressing remorse for entrapping him into that role.

According to The Chicago Tribune, Debbie Curran, who is the younger sister of von Wiese-Mack, called Heather’s claims “completely false.”

“Heather Mack’s stories about her relationship with her mother and the events in Bali have changed so many times, it is impossible to discern truth from deception,” she reportedly told the Tribune in a written statement.

“However, her accusation about Sheila killing Jim is completely false. Sheila loved Jim very deeply and was devastated by his death.”

Mack gave birth to a healthy girl named Stella in March 2015 and is raising her in prison, per local custom, until she turns two next month.

Hard to know what to make of this bizarre couple.

They killed her and tried to dispose of her body but beyond that it is madness.

Could be out by 2020 and living in Bali off the trust fund for a few years on parole.

The craziest part is she is on top of the world. Has two new female lovers and tons of cash. Meaning she is living the high life of low life scum in Kerobokan Prison.

WTF? Bali suitcase murderer is living it up in LP Kerobokan: alleged 'lesbian 3-ways', chain-smoking and bringing up baby

    Follow Coconuts BALI on Twitter
Photos posted to Instagram suggest Heather Mack is having the time of her life inside Kerobokan Prison.

Every several months or so, we get a fresh dose of news coverage about the infamous young American woman convicted for her role in her mother’s disturbing Bali Suitcase Murder.
The latest on Heather Mack is nothing short of ‘WTF’ yet dark, comical territory.
Daily Mail just published a lengthy exclusive about the 21-year-old and her apparently glamorous, "celebrity" lifestyle inside Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison.
Mack is serving 10 years in Bali after she was sentenced in April 2015 alongside then boyfriend Tommy Schaefer (he got 18 years) for murdering her mother, Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack, and stuffing her in a suitcase at the posh Bali St. Regis resort back in August 2014.
The young woman gave birth to her and Schaefer’s daughter, Stella, in March 2015. Since then, Mack and Schaefer have apparently broken up and Stella resides with her mother—but gets daily visitation from Schaefer. Stella is allowed to stay with Mack until she turns two—from there she will either be sent to the U.S. or must be given up to a local Indonesian family.
While you would think the infamous “Hotel K” would be one of the most god-awful desolate places to bring up a baby, Mack’s Instagram has been littered with photos of a healthy-looking and smiling Stella with her parents inside the prison.
Heather Mack and baby Stella pose for photo inside the women's section of Kerobokan Prison. Photo: Instagram
Tommy Schaefer and baby Stella inside Kerobokan Prison. Photo: Instagram
Other than the baby selfies are also photos with Mack and her new “friends”, who the Daily Mail identifies some of as her lesbian partners.
    Photo: Instagram
Heather Mack and other prisoners pose for a pic inside Kerobokan Prison. Photo: Instagram
Referring to Schaefer and Mack, the Daily Mail article claims that “both of them can drink, eat and smoke anything they want, whenever they want. And Mack is taking it to the extremes with her wild love life.” The article also plays up Mack's local celebrity status inside the prison, describing her as quite popular and well known amongst Kerobokan inmates.
Heather Mack takes a drag. Photo: Instagram
Mack and her young prisonmates call themselves the “pretty little criminals” and seem to “spend a lot of their time drinking the local Indonesian beer Bintang and smoking Marlboro.”
As we’ve heard many a time before, having money buys you better treatment and resources inside Kerobokan Prison and that’s apparently the case with Mack.
According to the Mail, rent runs at $200 per month inside the jail and $100 can get you a “day out” or spouse and/or prostitute visits, where guards turn a blind eye: “Mack was allowed out four weeks ago to visit a local Balinese restaurant with Stella on Mother's Day and even sent the photos to her pals, a source said.”

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say she was the brighter of the two, but she certainly appears to have been the one doing all the planning (poor as it was) and to have manipulated the guy into doing her bidding.

And despite the ^ article, even if she can get some minor special treatment, she still loses her kid in a year or so, and beer and cigs not withstanding, is still behind bars for a lot of years.

I agree with both of their sentences, but the guy got played.

Agreed as a sane person Davis. But she seems to have never fit in, was rich and knew it, had a terrible background through no fault of her own, and was just generally a waste of space as a young adult.

Now she is happy, sadly it may well turn out to be like fluke when it comes to kids. Good mommy is a big deal in Asia... Reduction time. She will serve much less time than Corby I would bet. $$$ in the long run.

I dont trust the tabloid press as well. But this time its pretty right but very very sensationalized.

^^^^guy probably went to Bali on Heather's insistence (I won't go if he doesn't, Mom!) Then guy went along w/ her plans bcos he thought they could get away with it, and bcos he also thought he'd get a free meal for life w/ the trust fund girl.

My first thought upon seeing those instagram pics was - stupid girl, for posting those pix on IG or Social media. What is it abt teeners/twenteeners and their phones and selfies! Heh...

On a serious note, she's a mixed up girl. Rich kid, got into bad company (read that in another daily mail article), always fighting w/ mom. Article said that mom & Heather had argued prior to the Bali trip (and Heather ran away), but she returned to mom's house & they went on a holiday to Bali (mom's attempt at reconciliation). Instead, mom got stuffed in a suitcase. She's a f**** up kid, and I *almost* pity her... Both of them (heather & tommy) deserve their sentences...

I hope the baby goes to a good home if/when she's taken from Heather.
