Phuket Jet-Skis Defy Army Order, Return to Patong Beach to Stave Off Outbreak of Crim

PHUKET: Jet-ski operators in Patong have defied an Army order and returned to the beach because of fears that some beach boys will resort to crime if they go without pay any longer.

Nucha Petchvimol, President of the Jet-Ski Association of Phuket, told Phuketwan today that the operators had returned to work today - just four days into the week-long ban - out of fear of the consequences of broke beach boys turning to prey on residents or tourists.

Khun Nucha said he had told the Army's top man on Phuket, Major General Somchai Ponatong, that he was forced to break the Army order.

The jet-skis are now parking up under the trees at Patong rather than on the water's edge, when the banning of sunbeds and umbrellas means that tourists who wish to avoid the sun seek the same shady space.

Brilliant, let us get on with our scams or we'll turn to crime and it'll be your fault.

Sounds perfectly logical, if you are Thai. I have seen this strategy used many times.

Mmm, of course, what they mean is that without recourse to their scams and thuggery these little shits would have no alternative but to seek proper employment involving hard work, an option which is quite abhorrent.

The solution is clear; take a platoon of marines down to the beach, smash their jet skis and beat the crap out of anyone laying claim to ownership. Eventually, even the most feckless of chickenheads will understand the game is over.

I hope they do. Let's see JJ try and threaten them.

Would be the best video ever.

It would be more fun to see the navy use the jetskis for target practice.

    For sure.

Our glorious leaders can only clean up the filth which previous governments have ignored and quite often controlled, by being seen to be strong. Don't blink, Prayuth, you're doing a great job so far, and lots more shit to go. I was overcharged again yesterday by a mosai, it's a disgrace.

What he needs to do is start an insurgency.
Get the Tuk Tuk mafia to go to war with the Jetski Mafia, sell arms to both sides and wait for attrition to take its toll.

Absolutely, I hope they break it up in some dramatic fashion. That'll give many people a good laugh.

Sorry mommies little puchai, but you are not special and the law does apply to you is going to be a tough lesson to teach some idiots.

I partied with some jet ski operators one time. The topic of scams came up and they had their side of the story. They were just as fiery about it as the tourists that say they get ripped off.

Well, at least we now know who is in charge on Patong's beach:

Jet-ski operators back on beach, vow to protect Phuket tourists

Mr Nucha expressed his gratitude for permission to continue to operate jet-skis at the tourist-popular beach.

“All we need is a place to earn a living and pay for our jet-skis. One jet-ski can cost up to 400,000 baht,” Mr Nucha said. “It is good that the military is lending us a hand. If you come to the beach, you can see how clean and organized it is.”

Mr Nucha told the Gazette that all the jet-skis are now being kept under the trees that line the beach.

The operators, who were banned from the beach for four days and have been the focus of thousands of international complaints over the years (story here), were granted permission to return to Patong Beach after raising the spurious issue of needing to make loan payments for the jet-skis.

“Phuket Vice Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada and Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsab agreed that jet-ski operators can still work on the beaches. The decision was made by local authorities, and approved by the Army,” said Col Somchai Ponatong of the Army’s 41st Military Circle.

“However, the jet-ski operators might not remain on the beach for long. We are now working on a more comprehensive plan, which includes solutions for all beach vendors.”

They even get to use a nice shady spot under the trees to park in, you know, the part that is going to be in greater demand than ever by tourists now that there are no beach umbrellas left.

The next step will be to allow all the drink vendors and umbrella touts back because "it's too hot for the tourists on the beach" or some such crap and the capitulation will be completed when all the restaurants say "well, if those vendors are back why can't I re-open?" and promptly do so.

Business as usual will be restored just in time for high season and nothing will have changed. Again.

When you say "fiery" do you mean lying through their teeth?

Some of us have seen them in action, remember.
