Phuket Rope Trick Robbery Tosses Patong Tourist on Rainy Night Ride

PHUKET: A South African tourist has told Phuket police that a trip rope was used to throw him off his motorcycle in a Patong downpour last weekend.

The tourist, Tune Laubscher, 42 on Monday, was knocked unconscious and suffered facial wounds that may leave him scarred.

It was last Saturday and the newly-arrived Mr Laubscher, who runs an advertising agency in Cape Town, was riding his rented motorcycle back to his resort about 10pm, after an afternoon at the beach and a night out watching rugby.

''It's difficult for me to say precisely where i was because it was pouring with rain at the time,'' he told Phuketwan last night.

''I remember going flying and banged my head. I must have been unconscious for a while. When I got up and went back to pick up my bike, my wallet was gone.''

"More alcohol than a rope methinks..I know the rope trip is used at times but this doesn't add up..Did anyone actually see this alleged rope?"

Either way, his wallet was stolen.

    Chances of recovery? Zilch.

You're not supposed to see the rope, er, isn't that an integral part of it?

Victims of the rope trick, including the two girls killed at KK Uni, also didn't figure out the rope trick in time.

I believe the twit who posted that comment is someone who never ventured out late at night on some of the roads. The Patong to Karon strip was particularly dangerous for a few years with multiple muggings and motorbike "highwaymen" lying in wait. My friend was a night auditor at one of the hotels and she was terrified for a year until they caught one of the gangs. It isn't just the tourists that got mugged. A lot of the Thai night shift workers were robbed too.

Yes but a pissed up jaapie coming off his bike and looking at it as an insurance opportunity, or coming up with a story so as not to look like a twat, is not out of the realms of possibility, is it?

Patong Region 8 police volunteer Wal Brown said it was the first incident he'd heard of in Patong where a rope had been strung across a road

When visiting friends over on the Darkside I generally return before it gets dark, can get kinda spooky otherwise. A while back I missed the cue, was riding back slowly in pitch dark, suddenly there's a torch lighting the middle of the road up ahead, then the light moved towards me and back, then sideways at the ground. I started slowing down but was also ready to lurch into overdrive...as I got nearer the light a couple more appeared from both sides of the road, then more, and at about 40-50m the entire area came alive with torches, headlights, uniformed cops on both sides, guns drawn etc.

I stopped as directed by the guy with the first torch, someone laughed and said something with 'farang' in it, and the head torch guy saluted and waved me along.

I hope they caught some of the scum they were after, but it wasn't a pleasant experience especially for a relative newbie at the time.
