Education ministry to integrate NCPO’s 12 Thai values into education curriculum

MCOT reports on Saturday that the Ministry of Education plans to implement junta leader Gen.Prayuth Chan-ocha’s 12 main Thai values into education reform roadmap of the year 2015-2021.

The roadmap is currently open for public opinion before being proposed to the National Reform Council in August.

Suthasri Wongsaman, Permanent-Secretary of Education Ministry said that the Ministry already started revising on history and civic duty subject in order to make students learn about the duty of the Thais, discipline, morality and patriotism. The new curriculum will be implemented in the second the semester of 2014 school year.

She said the Ministry would also “strengthen” the curriculum for the boy-girl scouts and Red Cross Youth.

Suthasri said that the NCPO’s policy to specify the main 12 Thai values is a good idea since all government agencies will have same direction in developing human resources.

    Gen. Prayuth said during the televised speech on Friday that the main 12 values according to the NCPO’s policy are as following;

    1. Love for the nation, religion and the monarchy
    2. Honesty, patience and good intention for the public
    3. Gratitude for parents, guardians and teachers
    4. Perseverance for learning
    5. Conservation for Thai culture
    6. Morality and sharing for others
    7. Correctly understanding democracy that has monarchy as head of the state
    8. Discipline, respect for the law and the elders
    9. Awareness in thinking and doing things, and following the guidance of His Majesty the King
    10. Living by the sufficiency economy philosophy guided by His Majesty the King
    11. Physical and mental strength against greed
    12. Concerns about the public and the nation’s good more than self interest.

For us foreigners the primary value is a sense of humour.

Well, that and a good exit plan.

Given that all children here participate in scouts or guides. It might have been better to target those groups.
Schools are for learning whereas scouts and guides are for life skills, group participation, self sufficiency, community spirit etc.

Anyone familiar with the current curriculum, especially for social studies, can tell you that it is already inundated with patriotism and Kwamphenthai-related topics. What more could possibly be successfully implemented? Not to mention all of the militarism and ceremonies in every other facet of the student experience. Haven't these bozos ever heard of the Law of Diminishing Returns? The problem in this country is not the common man, it's the people with power, whether obtained by birth, bank accounts or possession of weapons.

^Outside of expensive International schools, getting your kids reasonably educated in Thailand is not possible.

How anyone could seriously call those 12 edicts a "reform roadmap" of education here without pissing their pants gets my sincere respect.

Substitute a Christian God for King and it reminds of the fundamentalist bible belt American.

^I guess those who are supposed to learn those things get the education through their proper channels, i.e., private schooling and university abroad. But the rest of society are supposed to know their place. And evidently, they haven't known their place properly. Hence, the re-education.

Another generation of peasants being prepared to toil in the fields and perform manual tasks.

Can't have them learning anything useful.

Name a country that doesn't do exactly that.
The processes might be slightly more refined but the intended outcome is the same.

Interesting and most likely a good call.

Physical and mental strength against ignorance and stupidity would also be a good call.
