EU Condemnation Prompts Thai Military To End 'Special Detention'

BANGKOK — The European Union’s move to cut ties with Thailand in protest of last month’s coup has prompted the Thai military to release all detainees who were held in "special circumstances," says the junta’s spokesperson.
"The NCPO would like to confirm that we have now released all detainees who had been held in special circumstances," said Col. Winthai Suwaree, spokesperson of the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
"We will send information about their release, the situation of human rights, and our efforts to return Thailand to democracy to inform and create understanding with foreign countries, especially the EU members," Col. Winthai added.
It is still unclear what "special circumstances" means, but it could refer to detainees that are held in undisclosed locations for more than seven days, which is the maximum amount of time permitted under martial law. Yesterday, Redshirt activist Kritsuda Khunasen was released after spending nearly three weeks in military custody.
Col. Winthai's comments came several days after the EU suspended official visits to and from Thailand and placed a hold on signing a cooperation agreement in an effort to pressure the Thai military junta to restore electoral democracy.
The military leadership's plan for the country “falls short of the credible roadmap for a return to constitutional rule which the situation requires,”the EU statement said. “Fully functioning democratic institutions must be brought back to ensure the protection and welfare of all citizens."
The EU added that it "will consider further possible measures, depending on circumstances."
The governments of the United States and Australia have also scaled back relations with Thailand to voice their opposition to the 22 May coup d'etat.
In response to condemnation from these western allies, the Thai junta has argued that the coup was necessary to restore stability and that foreign observers do not understand the situation in Thailand correctly.
"We try to explain that a democratic regime has many details and complications," Col. Winthai said today. "Elections are just a part of democracy. We have to ensure that expression under democracy does not lead to bloodshed.

It was US and EU pressure together, I think. US has taken publicly harder line, while Europeans are still in committees thinking what to do

I bet they are . Be happy .........................or else .

Took them three weeks plus EU pressure to convince her that she was in fact happy.

I reckon she would habve been happier had she be at home for those three weeks.

Thaksin will probably send her a bonus for not disclosing anything controversial during her interrogation

in American speak, meditating is interrogating, get with the program. Thai Generals are learning fast, from their friends at the Pentagon.

Gitmo is actually a Club Med,

and waging wars for oil in third world countries is actually bringing peace and Democracy to the third world.

BANGKOK - The Redshirt activist who was placed in incommunicado detention by the military for more than three weeks has reportedly fled the country and vowed to expose the true story of her detention.

Kritsuda Khunasen, 26, was arrested on 28 May in Chonburi province. She was then detained at an undisclosed location, and the military junta has refused to speak out about her fate, despite calls for clarification from a number rights groups including the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Red-shirt activist Kritsuda Khunasen has revealed that when she was illegally detained by the junta, she was suffocated and physically assaulted.

The torture was aimed at forcing her to link former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra with the hard core red-shirt groups, according to Kritsuda.

    From that link.

She said she was beaten several times during the interrogation.
It is noted that when Jom asked why she did not appear to have any bruises on her body while appearing on the TV program, she did not answer the question.

In the interview via Skype, Kritsuda said she was blindfolded and her hands were bound on the first seven days of the detention. During this period, a female officer would help her when eating, taking a bath, and when she wanted to go to the toilet. She said while she was naked during taking bath, she heard a male voice. “I consider this sexual harassment.”

What a strange thing for a man to say, must have been a poof.
I would post pictures but life's too short.

Gosh, that was 11 years ago and just so passé.

Admittedly, there is a principle here. One person's right to due process is denied and we are a step away from goose stepping hordes but when we have 2,500 victims denied such process in the same country in one continuing event and no one seems to give a flying fuck then why bother in the first place?

It's Asia, and nothing very much is worth the candle.
Countries where the rule of law and basic human rights, particularly Habeas Corpus are respected seem to have done well with that philosophy. Thailand will never advance/evolve until it understands it. Thailand's military dictatorship are lip synching Pharell Williams' Happy much like the trannies do in their craptaculous shows where tourists go to gawk and laugh, and assume it is a substitute for the happiness that only comes from the respect for human rights and basic laws of civilization. So clap along with the junta if you think its approach to happiness is the truth and the way forward.
Methinks you's missing the point. Nothin's gonna happen until

Kritsuda Khunasen, the red-shirt activist who was illegally detained by the junta, said in her latest video clip that the military gave her paracetamol and anti-inflammatory drugs to remove the traces of torture. With the drugs and the period of time between when she was assaulted and when she appeared on TV, her bruises had disappeared.
