Liking anti-junta FB is crime: Thai police

Thai police warned Thai Internet users on Monday that “liking” or expressing approval of ati-military junta messages is a crime.

Pol Maj Gen Amnuay Nimmano, Deputy Commander of Bangkok Metropolitan Police, said liking or expressing approval of messages which ask people to join anti-junta activities is a crime because it helps publicizing the messages.

The Thai authority has constantly warned Thai Internet users that sharing and liking lese majeste Facebook pages constitute a crime itself as a violation of Article 14 under the Computer Crime Act, stating that whoever disseminates illegal content on the computer system shall face maximum jail term up to five years.

The Thai Netizen Network (TNN), an NGO for Internet freedom, has argued that Internet users should not be held liable for sharing a links because they do not have control over content on the webpage which can be changed without their acknowledgement.

“Making links, send links and publicizing links are the heart of the Internet. The connections between the networks are impossible without links. If sharing links are criminalized, it will obstruct the fundamental functions of the Internet and affect public interest,” writes the TNN’s statement Click Like is No Crime”,

Not a surprising move since there were pre-coup situations where the authorities threatened to go after internet users for 'liking'.

Here, doing some technical stuff with my hosting company, this is a quote from an email I recieved 5 minutes ago.

"The fact that you can ping and traceroute to the servers supports your position that nothing is being blocked corporately in Thailand.

    Best regards,"

So they've blocked facebook and the dailymail - who gives a monkeys.

The telecommunications regulator will strictly examine foreign ownership in telecom operators to prevent foreign dominance in the industry and to protect national security.

This follows online reports that a representative of Telenor Group of Norway, the major shareholder of Total Access Communication, disclosed that DTAC was ordered to prevent its customers from accessing Facebook on May 28 by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

.... An NBTC source said DTAC was the first target of the commission's foreign-ownership probe. Next are Advanced Info Service and True Corp.

    Excellent post. I love it.
I love this even more; Settapong Malisuwan, chairman of the NBTC's telecom committee was quoted as saying "If Thailand seems to have a lot of trouble, Telenor should go invest somewhere else". Brilliant. I can't wait for the reaction from the foreign community who's billions of baht in investments provide jobs and tax revenues I wonder if the dingbat realizes he just threatened a company that is majority owned by the Government of Norway.
General P. says he's taken charge of reassuring foreign investors. He might have a chat with this chap, because any work that's been done to reassure the market has been for naught.

Better yet, I can't wait for Thailand's reaction when the investment community reacts. Any attempt to intimidate or bully the Norwegian government over human rights won't go over well. What will Thailand do when its exports face a difficult time in the EU and North American markets? It's not as if the exports can be dumped in China or India is it?

I nearly bust a gut laughing at the idiot's comment. He should have read Telenor's website. He picked the wrong company.

    Human Rights
The Telenor Group believes that telecommunications enables the exchange of ideas and access to information. We also recognize that we do face human rights challenges in markets where we operate. Respect and continuous improvement are therefore important parts of our approach to human rights
It gets better!!!!!! Respect - Telenor Group
