Thai authorities to build state-owned 'Facebook-like Site'

Thai authorities to build state-owned social network site | Prachatai English

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) is proposing a plan to build a state-owned Facebook-like social networking site called Thailand Social Network.

Surachai Srisarakam, MICT Permanent Secretary, said the Thailand Social Network is part of the Ministry’s plan to build the country’s digital infrastructure, called “Smart Thailand,” according to Matichon Online.

The plan includes building a state-owned nation internet gateway and creating the nation’s social network site, in order to increase the efficiency of censorship by the authorities.

In the plan, initiated by the military junta, private Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will have to connect to the state-owned ISP TOT, so that it will be easier for the authorities to block websites and prevent terrorism, he said, adding that MICT will oversee the national gateway.

The concrete plan will be finished within two months, the official said.

Thai authorities have long complained that major social media operators, such as Google, YouTube, Facebook and LINE, do not cooperate with them when asked for users’ data and the blocking of sites.

I honestly think that Thais would put up more resistance to losing Facebook than they would to losing their right to Vote.

These paranoid ideals have been around and operating for some time...

The good old days when ceasing power and media/info suppression was a limited handful.

    Nearly impossible today.

Anyway, this has to be one of the daftest ideas I have read in all of this. I wonder which HiSo knobber's kid runs a web company, waiting for the lucrative contract? Have they not realised that NO Thai made website is fit for purpose? Maybe though this is an attack against the CIA using FB to spy on the nation?

Ever notice how frustrating it is to navigate [universally] a Thai-based, Thai-operated website??

But surely this idea isn't really being pushed as a 'consumer made' choice?

A website only needs to be good when it has competition.

    facebook is in decline anyway

people are starting to grasp the importance of privacy on the internet

social networking/chat will contiinue but via clients with seamless encryption and without centralised servers .

thai facebook is a laughable concept - just look at your average thai designed website - like 12 year old girls with a pack of 100 colour pencils and glitter glue
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Maybe its just so their loyal patriotic pro-military subjects will be able to chat when they block Facebook in the future. They'll keep both but fck with Facebook next time. Right now everyone uses Facebook. If there were two sites now, they might just go for a block.

    It's true.

A similar approach is taken to interior design.

Like they furnished the place after a trolley dash.

I've been in the UAE for a month while my wife has been here in CM. The place is starting to look noticeably more Thai.

There's a three metre step ladder in the fuggin kitchen with about a dozen hooks off it holding up plastic bags full of assorted crap.

    Same same Thai websites.

Why do rumors circulate so easily on Facebook ? Because there is no real, independent, reliable, Thai source of information.
When you see the popularity of a Michael Yon, you realize there is a problem. And the problem is not Facebook.
There are no Facebook problem in the USA or Europe because the people have access of a large variety of media from all sides. And these media can be accountable if they lie or mislead the people.

They don't know that. Thai leaders generally fail to properly assess the consequences of their actions.

    Irony isn't their strong point.

& some of the coup supporting TDers still don't get it.

What has amazed me over this entire period is how some coup supporting posters will go to any lengths to justify a position that they have decided to support, throwing all and any critical thinking skills out of the window; "Fox News Syndrome"...

Unlike most Thai gov sites, hope whatever they create, when accessed, my virus software won't flash red warnings and tell me to get the fuk out.
