    US demands immediate election

US Defence secretary Chuck Hagel demands the Thai military junta to allow immediate elections and to free detainees when the junta says there will be no polls for 15 months.
Speaking at the opening plenary meeting at the 13th Asia Security Summit in Singapore Saturday,

the Pentagon chief urged Thailand’s military to free scores of people detained under martial law since the May 22 coup.

Hagel’s strong comments came as military junta faced the threat of anti coup pretests at Ratchaprasong in central Bangkok Sunday.

Hagel called on the junta to end its curbs on “free expression” — which include banning political gatherings of more than five people and sweeping media controls — and for the army to “immediately restore power to the people of Thailand” through elections.

Condemning the kingdom’s “retreat from democracy” Hagel said the US had suspended its long-standing military ties with Thailand.

Australia’s foreign minister on Saturday also said Canberra had reduced its “engagement” with the Thai military.

The US is in no moral position whatsoever to tell others what to do.

Sure it can bully - but everyone can see through that shit.

It would be totally different if the US was a bastion of goodness.

It's just the big global gangster, and right now it's getting bitch slapped all over the planet and rightly so.

The US was once the greatest light on the planet in most regards.

It was broken from within - after the assassination of JFK right through to today.

Seems the natives have been brainwashed beyond salvation.

Only thing left is "The fall of Rome"

    May well be coming soon.

You have to understand a lot of countries in SE Asia, actually most of them, have very weak democracies, with a strong ruling party and an opposition that is barely allowed to exist. If you allow Thailand who was the strongest democracy in the area to revert to a military dictatorship for a couple of years "in order to restore democracy" (!?), you can't be sure than within a year or so you will have any democracy left in Asia.
The things we regret most is the things we didn't do

The word democracy means nothing these days. It's been twisted, mis-interpreted and used in biased ways by different parties for different gains over and over again.

Everybody believed in the principle, but the dishonest corrupted it to the point where it means nothing as most global citizens see that they've been smiled to and stabbed in the back.

Journalistic speak is new to you? The headline thrillers always diminish as the story continues. Think of it as partially yellow journalism.

It doesn't matter. It is not about Thailand. It's about Malaysia, Cambodia, Burma, .... that will suddenly feel entitled to cancel election in order to clean up the country from the forces of evil (understand the opposition).

Do you not think it's the right of every sovereign nation to decide their own fate?

I'd imagine that a number of countries would be concerned with knock-on instability flowing out of Thailand's mess.

Given Indo-China's legacy of instability, it is understandable.

There are quite a few "bigger pictures" that find their way.....

And everyone has their own version to as what all this might be.
