Junta Leader To Hold Power 'Indefinitely'

Junta Leader To Hold Power 'Indefinitely'
    26 May 2014

BANGKOK — According to Thai army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, the military has not established a time frame for when it will return power to a civilian administration.

Gen. Prayuth, who installed himself as the head of the National Council of Peace and Order (NCPO) after seizing power from the former government on 22 May, also refused to answer questions about whether he will assume the position of Prime Minister.

"Do you want to be Prime Minister? Do you?" Gen. Prayuth shot back at the reporter who asked the question.

Gen. Prayuth was speaking at press conference this morning after attending a ceremony that granted him official royal endorsement from His Majesty the King.

Speaking to the press, Gen. Prayuth stressed that the military now has "full authority" over all governmental functions, but said that many sectors of society are still participating in the governance.

After dissolving the Cabinet and both houses of Parliament, the NCPO now holds all legislative and executive powers.

Gen. Prayuth told reporters that the NCPO plans to establish an agency that will oversee nationwide "reforms," followed by the appointment of a new legislative assembly.

The army chief said that the military will swiftly solve many problems, including the overdue payments to farmers who participated in the government’s rice-pledging scheme. However, he also asked the public not to make too many demands.

"Right now, they should be concerned about what they can do to make the country safe," Gen. Prayuth said.

In response to the anti-coup demonstrations that have been cropping up around Bangkok in defiance of the NCPO's ban on public gatherings, Gen. Prayuth said that that soldiers have been ordered to enforce the laws harshly. He added that all illegal actions will now be dealt with in martial court.

Gen. Prayuth also repeated orders that journalists and social media users refrain from publishing anything that could “escalate the dispute." He warned that if necessary, the military may summon people for posting provacative comments on social media.

The military has already summoned over 200 people to the Army Club, including journalists and political activists who have been critical of the NCPO's actions. Many of those summoned have been detained in undiscolsed locations.

Gen Prayuth also asked the Thai Journalists Association, who signed a letter asking the NCPO to lift its restrictions on media, to stop making demands from this day onward.

When a reporter asked about when elections might take place, Prayuth answered, “It depends on the situation,” and walked off stage. The army commander has a history of taking a brusque attitude with the press.

NCPO chief says time for new PM not yet comes
    May 26, 2014

National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO ) chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said there was a need for the country to have a prime minister.

He said the country needs a prime minister but the time has not yet come.

It was still in process, he said.

He also said he didn’t’ know when the country would have a general election adding it depended on the situation.

In addition to rice payment which is his priority, he said the duty of the NCPO was to maintain peace and order in the country.

He said enforcement of martial law would remain unchanged, but could be even intense and enhanced if opposition to the coup rises and protesters remain defiant.

They could face courts martial if stubborn resistance continue, he said, adding that it was necessary to bring the county back to normal and return happiness to the people.

But he also said martial law could be eased if the situation eases.

He also said that people who were summoned to report would be kept at army homes for on 5-7 days and would be freed

He said keeping them under army environment might tell them how the military personnel live.

But if those who were freed remain defiant and violate our request for cooperation, then harsher action could be enforced, such as freezing all their financial transactions, or recalling them back for extended stay if they continue to incite unrest or send provocative messages on social media.

With his badges, braids and brylcreem he looks the archetype cartoon dictator.

He is an amalgamation of george c scotts bullying patton, arthur lowes pompous capt. mainwaring and stephen frys privileged general melchett.

but i'm slowly warming to his no nonsense take no prisoners old style military shpiel.

Ive a feeling he will get to enjoy the power he wields and after his retirement dont be surprised to see him stand as a prime ministerial candidate in any election he allows.

We all know how long the army will be power for as in till the event or they may install some sort of puppet government between now and then but I guarantee there won't be anything remotely resembling free and fair elections till after the event.

Until it is announced. . .that is I think a slightly less sinister view of why this has come to pass, but given the seriousness of the outcome of the behind-the-scenes machinations that are obviously underway I still don't think it bodes well- smacks of desperation (I think the coup itself can look like an act of desperation no matter which side one is on). There would never have been a way to prepare the nation for the inevitable, but I don't think that, say, 10 years ago this degree of disarray among the elite and disunity in the nation was anticipated.

Just look who Prayuth is close to, that is who is calling the shots and some would say has been for the last 5-10 years.

^^If by "close to" you mean "serving." I still think it's possible they wanted to avoid this, evidence being the long wait, the half-arsed coup preceding it. I don't think there is a lot of confidence on the part of coup-makers.

His job is to bring some sort of order to the country. He may be viewed as an armed criminal with the country at his mercy, but he is the de facto ruler right now so let's see how he handles it.

Hopefully he has learned something from the monkeys that ended up in charge after the last coup.

Everything points to that, but when you don't like something you absolutely cannot change it makes sense to change the way you look at it.

    Give him a chance.

...which will trigger the next round of same same.

Seems to me one of his objectives is to finish off where the last coup failed, which was to crush the Thaksin legacy even if that means making him a martyr. Fraught with dangers, but right now the country is more important than individuals and CVs and egos.

No doubt there is communication between the junta and Thaksin. Not much hope, but it's possible something might come out of it.
