Phayao red-shirt landmark sign to go

Phayao red-shirt landmark sign to go
    26/05/2014

PHAYAO - Provincial authorities have begun a campaign to clear signs of red shirts from public places in the northern province, including a landmark post, after the government was deposed in a coup.

Phayao deputy governor Nimit Wanchaithanawong said on Monday all district officials were directed to talk with red-shirt members in all villages in their areas to remove all signs showing their position and all community leaders agreed to comply with the order.

The decision came after the army had contacted Phayao and other provinces to clear all signs of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

Phayao, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the strongest UDD strongholds in the northern region. Several places have put up a sign declaring they are red-shirt villages.

A landmark sign in the province is a big roadside concrete marker designating Chun a ''red-shirt district''.

Mr Nimit said the mark would not be removed to avoid hurting the feeling of the builder but a new message that would help commuters would replace the old one.

A new message for the marker to help commuters, perhaps
"Move along, nothing to see here."

    Cool

Good riddance to signs declaring an entire area to be one particular political party only. BUT, the replacement may not be any better.
