MOPH warns against mental stress resulting from over-consumption of news

BANGKOK, 24 May 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has warned the public against over-consumption of news, which may lead to mental stress.

Dr. Narong Sahamethaphat, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, called a video conference of public health personnel on Friday to discuss service to the public during the current period, as well as security measures for health workers and the various public health establishments. Those at the meeting deemed that no abnormalities had so far been found at the public health agencies throughout the country.

Dr. Narong told those at the meeting to review their respective agency's protocol in providing health service during emergencies and disaster periods, in order to minimize losses during such times.

Wachira Phengchan, deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, on Friday cautioned those who constantly follow up on political developments against stress. According to him, t continuous exposure to such news could cause mental stress, and people at risk of such stress are advised to follow only the news from state-run news outlets in the morning and evening. If one feels stressed, has difficulty sleeping, has a headache or becomes easily irritated, he/she should consult the stress clinic at public health establishments or call the Mental Health Department's hotline number 1667.
