    Thaksin: Let's forgive and forget

    Thaksin: Let's forgive and forget
    12 Apr 2014

Thaksin Shinawatra has asked Thais to forgive and forget starting from Songkran Day.

The fugitive former prime minister, who is spending the holiday in Hong Kong, made the plea in a speech that was broadcast on the satellite station Channel 4 for the People.

"What grieves me is the loss of our good old culture. Thais used to be generous and caring. What happened has destroyed that spirit," Thaksin said.

"In the past, we helped one another but today we bare our teeth. We fight, shoot, stab, rob and threaten one another. I can't believe this is happening in Thailand after we have developed ourselves to a level close to becoming a developed country."

The political divide is worsening, he said, "because Thais do not forgive".
"We hold grudges. We slander one another and live with lies. Those who do not know the truth are misled.

"In every country plagued by conflicts, people try to avoid inciting hatred using false information. They don't want the repeat of what happened in Rwanda, when two radio DJs whipped up malice between two tribes.

Eventually, genocide led to 800,000 deaths. The DJs were sentenced to life in prison. What they did achieved nothing except mountains of bodies.

"As tomorrow is Songkran Day, I would like to apply the concept of our good old traditions to all Thais," Thaksin said.

"Let's make April 13 the day we put everything behind us and be generous to one another like when disasters struck, whether it was the tsunami or the great floods, during which Thais lent a hand to one another.

"I love, respect and care for all Thais but you don't have to worry about me. I'm in good health. My only concern is for Thailand to be peaceful and Thais to love another once again."

While in Hong Kong, Thaksin is expected to meet with several former Pheu Thai Party MPs and other supporters.

He has already met with Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Khamronwit Thoopkrachang, who has drawn criticism for his oputspoken admiration of Thaksin.

Yes, the man who orchestrated the death of over 3000 Thai citizens in the early 21st century and funded the events of 2010 in Bangkok causing the death of almost 100 people.

The man who was found guilty of massive electoral fraud and also being in possession of 46 Billion baht he couldn't account for.

    Amnesty?

Most of the time I'm with you on this point.

    However.

On my more charitable days, this could be seen as the possible start of an excellent solution if proper reforms are in the off.

I think if he just walked away from politics his wish for the people of Thailand would be accomplished.

Unfortunately his presence continues to stir the pot. Sincerity is not his best quality if indeed he has one

If only the Thai populous [mindless supporters or not] had a grasp of reality, knowledge, and recent history - things might develop differently for the betterment of the society.

Not to cast a lone vote of negativity towards Mr. T and his ilk - but we need to examine the others as well.......they're all scallywags, hypocrites, and evil cunts.

    Developed country.
I don't think we want that.

Consider the countries that are deemed as developed.

Same here, apart from the driving. Something needs to be done about that. The roads and the cars people buy are developed, but the mind set is decades behind. Thais are not ready for development.

Any notion that this country is capable of becoming "developed" in my lifetime has been totally lost in recent months.

Forgive murder, extortion, theft, corruption and unmitigated greed? Sure, when your rotten carcass is incinerated and the dust is blown across some foul open sewer to be swept into the gulf of Thailand to mingle with all the other detritus of ten million arseholes.

nice message ? that's being delusional. More like an offer to a truce because he knows he can't win a war with a cattle of kwais against military tanks.

that alone speaks volume about the mental state of the character and how far he will go or sacrifice people to reach his objectives.

Too easy to ask for forgiveness when you have been behind for years the revolts and killing of innocents.

he wants forgiveness and unity ? how about he surrender and do some jail time, or better yet, kill himself as proof of his love for Thailand.

I think he should forget about his confiscated money/taxes. Forget about trying to control the country through his sister. Forget about ambitions to be the first president of Thailand, Forget about having all his cronies in important offices. Et al.

    Then we might forgive him...

It's a fair deal. What would happen if everyone crooked politician was scrutinised and called to answer for their crimes? Thaksin has been unfairly singled out by opposition just has corrupt as him. I think the gesture is heart warming and at the core of everything that is the good Thai nature

Thailand is only going backwards. Time for people to grow up, and deal with things the way they are- not some concocted fantasy of feudal Siam, only clung to by a deluded Bangkok Upper/ Middle class element, and their rubes. Here we have a country with considerable momentum being held back, economically wounded, and humiliated on the world stage by the anachronisms and bigotry of a few. I do not think the hardcore suthepians care about Thailand or it's people, one whit.

Prediction- The general amnesty will happen, after the Big Event. Either that or there is gonna be a continuing shitfight, and the likes of Mark and Suthep may well get to sample prison cuisine. But Thaksin never will.

If you say so. I hold him in no more contempt than suthep/ kamnan poh/ banharn/ chalerm, et al, any number of other sleazy sinothai political operators. I only hold mark in equal contempt however, because of his utter political ineptitude.

Either way, his message that Thailand should move on is right on the money. I would say the same thing if banharn, chalerm, mark etc had said it- even suthep, although we know he never will. It hardly requires a genius to work out who has damaged, and continues to damage this nation- it's economy, growth prospects, individual opportunities, international reputation, tourism, and foreign investment. What a criminal waste.

Well so long as we get to forget about all the Democrat cronies in the courts, the anti corruption commission (sic) and the EC.

His message comes on the back of a poor redshirt turnout in Bangkok. He was the instigator of appointing Jatuporn as a pushy leader to create passion amongst his followers. Big fail unfortunately and he now knows the game is up.

1 million in Bangkok to defend his sister just isn't going to happen and his latest strategy of lets 'forgive and forget' is quite honestly only for those who just got off the train.

Actually the "3000" figure comes from total of 2600 deaths in the country overall during said years including road accidents etc. Whatever, war on drugs was highly effective and it was supported by the highest... as well as the people. From legal point of view, can't see how it could be blamed on single person.

Just stating the fact dont put any shirt on me.

When quoting figures it would assist if you could provide a link. Even in Thailand it is difficult to confuse extrajudicial killings with road deaths. I personally prefer facts much moreso than ideology

A chronology of Thailand's "war on drugs"

You have a point there. No figures or links coming from me at this hour during Songkran, I know the figures because I learned them, well I suppose you dont find this on MOD website. Where are your links to reliable information as in scientific journals?

I dont think I installed any "ideology".

Your link appears to be politically motivated drivel, at first glance. I totally agree with shortcomings (as well as benefits) of Thaksin administration, but murder is not one of them - I think.
