    If an armed struggle ensues
i doubt very much that a full on armed "french revolution" style struggle will occur.

thais at every level have too much to lose, so it wont happen.

a few skirmishes, grenade hurlings and drive by's maybe, a few poor innocents will be killed and maimed as is normal during these upheavals, but thats all.

eventually some arrests and incarcerations on both sides will ensure mutual faces are saved and pride not diminished too much, both sides will declare themselves the best of friends, thais at heart, best country and people in the world etc.etc.etc., grinning generals, police chiefs and protest leaders will be seen in an orgy of self congratulation, mutual back slapping and some serious wai-ing will occur but life will probably carry on very much as before in the land of the free.

the "peasant class" may be thrown some crumbs, e.g. some infrastructure projects and some subsidies to soften the blow, but the elite will hardly be affected at all.

    they rarely are.

Thai are too much of cowards to stage a real revolution based on ideals and principles,

    not in their culture,

I hear what you say Tax, and you maybe right. My knowledge of the Thai psychology is not at a level were I would hazard to debate with you.The Irish, French, yes had a history of fighting (some would say both had a loosing history) but other racial or nationalistic groups reached boiling points and then much to their masters amazement revolted.

You need very few radicals, normally not your peasant class, who are intelligent enough to wage a terror campaign. Small cells of people who are anonymous. If anyone wants to live the experience of Northern Ireland for 20 years feel free. In the end the ruling class did loose their privilege and had to settle into the idea that being apart of the "British" rule of law meant that everyone had to live by it.

Sorry getting of topic. Don't think I want to see any type of bloodshed or war, just feels like we are heading for a train wreck in the near future. No middle ground, just threats.

Apparently all the reds were sent home at 7:00 this morning due to the poor turnout.

I noted a distinct lack of twitter coverage, etc. for this rally which I consider a bit strange as it was the first one they had held for nearly six months.

What do you all think the reason for the poor turnout were?

    1) Apathy?
    2) Resentment over the rice scheme payments (or non-payments)?
    3) UDD out of touch with their grassroots supporters?
    4) Just the hardliners showed up?
    5) The "location" was too "controversial" for many?

I would pretty much say "yes" to all of those factors.

Both sides have a small "hard core", and a much larger "meh - ok" support goup. I think the reds have alienated a big proportion of their "lesser committed" support group - talk of militia, splitting the country, screwing lots over with the rice pledge. There was also a genuine under current that this gathering might have attracted violence, and many people were just not that prepared to put their life potentially on the line.

Ideally the clean-up should be billed to the organisers.

^^ Supposed to be one of the most beautiful roads in Thailand (I am a bit "meh" about it to be honest). Seems somehow unfortunately symbolic that the reds gone and shit upon it.....

    Absolutely

The yellow protest sites were cleaned weekly and left in pristine condition. The contrast in some ways illustrates the fundamentally different mindset of the two groupings.

They certainly left a mess but I saw the same thing downtown near Sanam Luang and onto Rachadanern after the first big protest when the Southerners came up for the first time. It'll get cleaned up. It looks like there's still some stages there and the tents are still there on the right so they haven't walked away. Thailand is a craphole anyway pretty much everywhere outside of the landscaped properties of the wealthy and the inside of shopping malls. Reds don't have a monopoly on littering.

Red shirts disperse from Utthayan Road, to hold another rally after Songkran
    April 7, 2014

Red-shirt demonstrators dispersed from their rally site at the Utthayan Road Monday morning, Channel 3 reported.

They dispersed after Jatuporn Promphan, the chairman of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship, told them to return home and get ready to come back for a bigger mass demonstration after the Songkran holidays.

The red shirts gathered at the road, which borders Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom, Saturday to show their force to protect the government and warn the military against staging a coup.

either way, it will most certainly be red sympathisers, as municipal council worker drones, who have to clean up the filth left by their thoughtless comrades as they scurried off back to their homes with their tails between their legs.

    power to the people !!!!!

Yes, when the PDRC moved back from the democracy monument the whole street was trashed. Even had overturned minivans blocking the streets. All the flower beds were completely destroyed and both sides of the road badly messed up with graffiti. I pass this area frequently and the former dem governer you mention had a small army of workers down there cleaning up the mess and replanting all the flower beds. However, the graffiti still remains and I'll try to get some pictures of it next time to illustrate that the southern folk are just as dirty as their nothern brothers............united at least in a mess of their own making.

It is a shame that Thais are such filthy bastards, leaving their mess everywhere - all of them. Posters highlighting this mess, and claiming some sort of special case against the red protesters are just stupid, and, as per usual using a selective memory and/or are uninformed...

It would be nice for street protesters on all sides to:

    1) Not be there.

    2) Clean up after themselves.

    3) Not shoot and kidnap: folks who wanna vote, folks going to a dental appointment, folks out fro a walk, army personnel driving past on motorbikes, etc...
    Cycling should be banned!!!
