British tourist dies following Jet Ski accident at Pattaya Island

On Thursday Afternoon, Pattaya Police, who have jurisdiction over Larn Island which is off the coast of Pattaya, received a report of a British Tourist who had died following a Jet Ski Accident.
The incident occurred on Thursday Morning off the coast of Tawaen Beach on Larn Island and resulted in the eventual death of Mr. Stephen David Campbell aged 38 from Blackpool, England.
His friend, Mr. Mark Kear aged 38 and his girlfriend Khun Ganyarat aged 38 reported the incident at Pattaya Police Station and said the pair had been in Pattaya for 5 days and were staying at a North Pattaya Hotel.
They decided to spend the day at Larn Island on Thursday and when they arrived Mr. Campbell decided to rent a Jet Ski. Mr. Campbell was seen driving the Jet Ski at some speed and was seen to come off when he struck a rope used to anchor a boat. He sustained a 20cm long laceration across his neck and was losing blood quickly.
Mr. Campbell was taken to Hospital but could not be saved by medics. Police have seized the Jet Ski to see if a mechanical issue was to blame for the accident. A post-mortem examination will take place at the Police Forensic Institute in Bangkok and the British Embassy in Bangkok have been informed.

poor fellow, should have kept his eyes open.

not unusual for jet skiers and snowmobilers to decapitate themselves by running into wires, ropes and cables.

    Rip to deceased.

I am missing the "Jet Ski" gene. You couldn't pay me to ride one at Pattaya, let alone fork over good money to rent one. Too congested, many inexperienced/intoxicated drivers, damage scams...

    But to each his own...

Designated jetski areas have always been talked about but when you got the jetski mafia and the banana monkey boat mafia running things, who would ever stick to such rules?

Used to happen on a regular basis on snow machines in Canada. Now almost everyone including little kids wears helmets, often full face jobs. Think education helps. Btit comes and sees what looks like fun in the sun. Pay your money and zoom around, 10,000's do it his luck.... Just bad luck.... not knowing the dangers another 10 mins he would have have had a story to tell the lads in the pub when he got home!.

This reminds me of an incident more than a decade before. The wife and I along with our 5-year old daughter decided to go visit Pattaya one afternoon.

Settled on the beach with all the usual drinks and snacks. I decided to take my my daughter on a jet ski ride. Hired the boat and away we went. Probably after 15 minutes or so my daughter had enough and wanted to go back.

So we went back to the spot where we had hired the jet ski from. Keep in mind that during this time, we were the only ones out in this area. Did not see anyone else and did not hit anything.

Anyway, as soon as we came back one of the local jet ski operators started pointing and screaming. My Thai was not great at that point and the daughter was to young to understand what was going on.

The wife soon came to our rescue. She was not a happy camper.

The end result was that we ended up chilling in our chairs watching the ocean. The bad boys soon ignored us and I assume went after someone else.

With as much traffic as Pattaya generates now, there is no way I would rent a jet ski. My thoughts to the family involved.

People who have no experience of watercraft probably don't realise that you should stay away from other watercraft, especially when travelling at speed.

PHUKET: A British holidaymaker riding a jet-ski in Pattaya was killed when his throat struck a taut speedboat anchor rope, according to local authorities.

The family of Stephen Campbell, 38, from Blackpool, is now seeking to raise 1.6 million baht to fly his body home. He was not fully insured.
Do they want him to have the First Class Cabin to himself?!
