Thailand's New Year road toll: 161 now dead

NY road toll: 161 now dead
    30/12/2013

A total of 75 people were killed and 503 injured in 456 road accidents on Dec 29, the third day of the "seven dangerous days of 2013 New Year.

Sunday’s fatal accidents increased the road toll for the first three days to 161 killed and 1,390 injured in 1,322 accidents, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department's Road Safety Operation Centre reported on Monday.

The 161 death toll was up 14, or 9.52%, on the same period a year ago.

The province with the highest accumulated number of deaths (12), injuries (62) and accidents (51) in the past three days was Nakhon Ratchasima. On the bright side, 21 provinces had no traffic-related deaths.

Drink-driving and speeding remain the major causes of accidents, the centre said.

It's a lawless racetrack out there. Every lane is the fast lane, pick up trucks and mocys driving the wrong way up the hard shoulder, u turns every couple of kilometres on what should be the fast lane, with a short run up if you're lucky for the poor fukkers joining the racetrack. Not a speed camera or copper in sight.
Hardly a surprise Thailand's roads are up there amongst the world's most deadly

There is another country that rivals Thailand for road deaths, South Africa, every Easter weekend the press in South Africa openly state that by the end of the Easter weekend there will be more than 300 + road deaths. 300 is the bench mark in SA.
What is the usual bench mark figure in Thailand, and what is the largest total over the past years?
Can this year beat previous years.?

I am not being callous, some races are just appalling behind a steering wheel.

I wish I had an onboard camera fitted on that drive from Bangkok to Samui to show the stupidity of these Thais and some of the events that panned out, one involved some retard running in the middle of the motorway to retrieve what looked like a 50kg bag of rice.

Instead I only have a pic of some mobile bunk beds, spiderman, durian, sugar cane ? beer chang and a monkey. But if uploading these pics can save just one persons life....

Not a good mix on the Thai mindset.

I tell you what I did notice on that trek. Loads of tents set up roadside, supplying free coffee, fruit and showers to drivers for the New Year exodus.

Is that a new thing ?

Can't people just stay home - safe and sound.

Most everyone I know does now.....Songkran, New Years, Loy Kratong, whatever.
Don't even need a special occasion to witness the madhatters on the road - it's everyday.

I think Song Kran period is about 600.

This year the north is definitely busier than usual? People escaping the political turmoil? Tourists coming to experience the unusually cold weather (Mrs theory) ... but it's pretty manic. I went to go from Lamphun to Chiang Mai for a little break with the fam, got in insta-grid lock on the highway, and u-turned and headed down a provincial road to Lampang. The trip back on the main highway from Lampang to Lamphun / Chiang Mai was pretty hectic. All BKK number plates, overtaking, undertaking, cutting in, only saw 3 accidents and only 2 looked like they could be fatal.

No pics, but saw it everywhere. The worst example i remember was an 18 month old asleep between his dads legs in the footwell and sandwiched between his mom an dad was his 3 year old brother nodding off.Sure makes you slow down when you see that
Was really annoying on Samui sitting behind scooters who wouldnt ride on the very left, but then they all know that vacant space is reserved for those driving the opposite way

Look, none of you guys give a fuck either so don't vilify me. If you cared then you'd be doing something about it instead of discussing it within this tiny online community, but really the only thing you can do about it is avoid it and warn newcomers of the local stupidity and general disregard for human values.

The Thais obviously don't care a fuck about their road safety, so just leave them to it and use the roads as little as possible, if at all, on new years eve.

Nearly 80% of those deaths are scooter riders, the majority of whom weren't wearing a helmet, and nearly all of the ones who were wearing one had a useless 150baht Tesco special- most of them would probably (many of them definitely) still be alive had they been wearing a proper lid.

As bad as the drivers, roads, overloaded trucks, etc are in LOS, it's the lack of riding skill, gear, alcohol consumption, and law enforcement to deal with these issues that are the major causes- the roads are dangerous, but that's compounded by riders who are dangers to themselves and others.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Where in Thailand is New Hampshire?

Thailand does not care about road safety. America and the west generally does but some countries seem only to embrace our mistakes.

My comments are all related to the title of this thread - the keywords being Thailand, New Year and dead.

Conclusion - avoid the roads on new years eve in Thailand. I really don't think that is such an unhelpful contribution.

I do understand where TGS is coming from, if The Thais cared more about their atrocious road toll, they would do more to help them selves.
Like drive in a more responsible manner, encourage their kids to ride properly and legally, with helmets etc.
Like put pressure on the thieving enforcement services.

    Scamp is correct.

You cant protect people from their own stupidity so why bother.

The upside is that they wont be able to pass on their stupid gene any more, gradually resulting in a population with better survival skills.

Its natures way, so dont get too upset about it.

To say that we care is wrong, we dont care. We are just thankful that we or our loved ones werent on that bus or in the back of the pick up.

Anybody who has driven a vehicle after consuming alcohol or been a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone who has knowingly consumed alcohol cannot say that they care about road accidents and deaths here.

They are just as stupid as those they criticise.
