Suthep threatens to 'shut down' Bangkok afer New Year holidays

Suthep threatens to 'shut down' Bangkok afer New Year holidays
    December 29, 2013

People's Democratic Reform Committee secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said the protesters would "shut down" Bangkok after the New Year.

He said the date has yet to be announced but told people in provinces to prepare to come to Bangkok.

Roads will be paralysed, but there would be no closing of airports or train stations, he said.

If we cast our eyes to the west around 6pm tomorrow we can all watch in awe as Suthep extinguishes the Sun.

Candidate registration has only been blocked in 6 (I think that may have risen to 8) provinces (all in the south) out of the 76 in Thailand. All the blocked provinces are in the south, so where are all the 'people' that are supporting Suthep? I think there's going to be a lot of angst in the Democrat Party if the election goes ahead, and they're consigned to reading the news and watching TV to see what's happening in Parliament.

IMHO the Government is doing things right by keeping the cool towards street protesters, and insisting on going forward with the election.

But I think it is a major mistake not having arrested Suthep by now, and consequently any lieutenants of his trying to replace him, he should have been buried in some obscure prison far from Bangkok with no communications to anyone. I think there is plenty of solid legal reasons and evidence to support such an arrest, keep him without bail until his murder-trail goes forward, and signal "abeshit" that he will go same way if he also start to advocate illegal street violence and blockades.

It is time to cut the head's of the snakes.

I have been thinking the same until recently.

Arresting him could just be seen as an attempt by Yingluck to silence him. I think she is right to let Suthep have his say. Let him do all the damage he wants, continue to claim he represents "the people" and then give "the people" their say at the ballot box.

My guess is that, this time around, given another six weeks of this nonsense, Suthep will have damaged the Democrat party to such an extent that they may have trouble getting their supporters to vote anyway. One thing is certain, Yingluck isn't losing any support and a coup would only strengthen the resolve of the PT/TRT supporters.

The army are seen by many as holding the trump card, but I do not believe it is Suthep's to play. Gen Prem has asked the army to support Yingluck and their reluctance to become involved may be due to the Thai version of Hobson's choice; support a Prime Minister you don't want or delay intervention permanently in that way Thais are so good at.

They ought to focus on winning an election and getting the votes.

I have recently thought about the concept of nation-states in general. Many are too big and too general, over the wants and values of regional people from different backgrounds.

These divisions happen so often in all regions of the world. Smaller, locally controlled nation-states are better in this situation. But add the food supply control, resources, and nation-state mentality over what "path" to follow and these issues will always exist.

One thing for sure is that we do not know exactly how the Thai mind works, no matter how long we live in Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter.

"East is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet"...

I suspect that Suthep expected to cause much more "damage," and he must be frustrated by Yingluck's restraint...

Holding the country to ransom is premeditated treason. He should be arrested and tried, then democratically shot.

Your arguments are very sound and good and hopefully you are right.

My concerns is how much excuse the Army/Elites needs to take the power they so desperately covet before an expected certain event, and if by leaving him loose he will be able to provide just enough mayhem.

Out of sight out of mind, and harsh determination seems to work with Thais, Tanks roll into town with determination - no one fights back!.
And look at the imprisoned red-shirt leaders, they practically dissipated from media and minds after their incarcerations.
Sondhi got led poisoning and since have mostly kept his trap shut, no one gives a fvuck etc. etc.

So I thought it would maybe be worth the initial trouble to take Suthep and anyone trying to follow suit. And last but not least it would be the right thing to do/signal to send - according to law.

    We shall see

The wealthy and elite have the most to gain by getting rid of the PTP. You think they would muzzle this idiot or hire a professional "handler" for him like many Western politicians have.

When mobs rule the end result is never neat and clean. The more the Dems demonstrate and feel powerful the more they will be driven to extremes. (Remember Krystal Night). They will feel justified as they are saving the country that they love and it is of course their destiny to protect the sanctity of the country.

Another month of this? Will the Army decide that the country is ungovernable and the step in to restore order. And of course they will appoint friends in high places.

He certainly must have thought a government collpase or coup would happen faster. He's an old school dirtbag. It's amazing that the average folks out there have even the slightest respect for him.

I think they are lost in a cultural nightmare. These people wouldn't risk losing face by having a native English speaker proof read their 3-word notices, so it's understandable not to muster the services of non-Thais using a non-Thai solution to save the country.

Once you get out past Ekkamai there isn't really much happening so Bang Na is the same as usual.

Can't see the military take over again, they fcuked up so impressively last time and that's after ousting the only PM to ever complete a full term, who topped that feat by winning a second term, that the likelier scenario would have us shift from civil dissent to the early phases of civil war. Best place for the military is on the sidelines, and best place for those winding up the military is in hospital, er, um, because they must be sick to consider upping the ante.

Even the obvious is only obvious to some...the international community pretends to be strong but swoon at the sight of blood, unless it's wholesale, go figure; squarehead would happily go nuclear from afar, costs him nothing since he's piling on the billions used to pay his bots by controlling events and therefore the local markets; no colour is less greedy and corrupt and inept than any other, so to those 'power to the people' charlatans I say get real; the world moves on and Thailand must keep at least within a few screens; yellow must end up giving, which means shedding part of an outer layer of power and so we take off on another merry cycle.

Put a gun to my head and I turn yellow, not by thinking they are good for the country but because they could maintain the status quo which in this case is a major plus, and are less unstable than expensive and unsustainable populist policies that look so far forward they may carry the government all the way to the next election before smacking into a rock. And of course, though Western liberal democracy may be the best form of government we know of, it's not for everyone and certainly not for Thailand, not yet, not until the people are educated to deserve the vote, which in all likelihood will be never, and until then everyone suffers every few years because that's the way it is.

Ever wonder why farangs aren't allowed to have political opinions in this great democracy?

This is total bull. Do you really believe that when western democracies instated universal suffrage in the 18th/19th centuries, a majority of voters were particularly educated?

Gosh, even now, nearly half of voters for the US Republican Party believe that Obama is not american, is a muslim or whatever.
