Airports of Thailand To Hike Passenger Departure Tax

Airports of Thailand To Hike Passenger Departure Tax

A few days after Thailand's Government had disclosed that it was looking to impose a fee on foreigners entering the country from January 2014, a board meeting of Airports of Thailand (AOT) on October 24 approved an increase to its passenger departure charge for domestic and international flights.

Subject to approval from the Department of Civil Aviation, the departure charge for international flights will rise to THB800 (USD25.70) from THB700, and to THB200 from THB100 for domestic flights.

The reason for the increased passenger tax was put down to increased costs, while AoT also needed to improve its facilities and services. It was added that recognition of the need to protect the tourist sector had led to a restriction, in percentage terms, of the rise in the charge for international passengers.

The new fees will apply at all airports operated by the AoT when approved, including Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket international airports.

It will be rough but I think I can manage. It will just be added onto the ticket price here. Most wont even notice at that amount.

    99% will be completely unaware.

Just how the Thais love it.

Remember when they had the booth you had to pay in cash before leaving, not even that long ago, up to 2005 maybe, I think it was 500b back then.

What used to happen to people who said they did not have it in any form and their plane was leaving in 2 hours? Hardly carted off to the IDC.

Must be quite a money maker for them though, if you're looking at 20m odd tourists, that's 1.4 Billion baht p/a just on them alone as it stands now at 700b.

Add the 500b proposed entrance health insurance for an extra Billion baht p/a.

Not bad really, 2 1/2 odd billion baht p/a pays for the Khao Yai mansions and S-Class mercs no problem. While the Burmese in the basement slave away making yellow polo shirts.
