Bangkok’s nightclubs: Great places to catch TB

This Tuesday, the Disease Control Department released the results of a study into the prevalence of tuberculosis in Bangkok’s nightclub workers.
Out of the total nightclub workers screened, 186 turned up with suspected cases of TB. Twenty-four of those cases have been confirmed.
Somsak Akksilp, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, told the Nation that the conditions inside nightclubs were propitious to the spread of TB, since these spaces are frequently crowded and rarely well ventilated.

Hundreds of suspected TB cases found among Bangkok nightclub workers

Actually.....not really news as this article is from back in April. Maybe a kind Mod will move it to the Lounge as its sort of worth knowing anyway.

I don't know if true or not, but I have heard that people with TB symtoms/or TB cannot travel to US, and some other countries. Any one know about this?

My Wife caught TB last year.We were told to sleep in separate rooms but if you are fit and healthy in most cases your body just fights off the TB Germ.
My wife caught TB because she mixed with others with TB in the Village when she had Flu and should have been in bed resting. When you are ill your bodies defences are low which makes you more susceptible. She also had a HIV test ( which was clear )as people who are co-infected with HIV and TB are 21 to 34 times more likely to become sick with TB . Risk of active TB is also greater in persons suffering from other conditions that impair the immune system.

Probably not unrelated to the high rates of HIV in bar workers. A very nice reservoir of infectionl

Try teaching in classrooms with a total of hundreds of students all coughing and splutering.
I caught the dreaded TB in 2002, had to go home to OZ for 6 months. Spent 6 weeks in an isolation ward.

I recall this episode of yours, Alan.
I remember you mentioned [email] that she was indifferent about completing her med prescription - because she thought she was feeling ok. And being interactive with others [villagers] while still infected, doesn't bide well.

It's well known that stronger, more resistent strains, have developed from those whom don't see the treatment through it's course.

All is well now, I know.
    Be careful.

I made sure she went to the Hospital every month and completed the 6 month course of medication.I also managed to talk her into staying away from other know infected locals.
The problem is ,when locals are diagnosed with TB they take the Meds for a month or 2 ,feel OK and think they are cured, only to go on to infect others.

alitongkat...its started with a cough and then got steadily worse over a course of a month or so.The Doctors kept tell her she didn't have TB as she didn't have blood in her sputum. If they had tested her earlier, the treatment could have started sooner!!

Were has alitongkat's post gone? Just wanted to quote it and get the message 'you don't have permission to do that'. Huh? Refreshed the page, and it has vanished. Made a very good point blaming livestock breeders feeding antibiotics to the animals for the emergence of multiresistant bacteria strains, instead of the doctrine that people not completing the course of the medication are to blame. TB infects many mammals. The main strain of the Mycobacteria that cause TB is called 'bovis', infecting cattle and humans.

There was a similar health warning last year about using internet cafes where children play video games. One that I can vouch for...especially if they have air con. If you don't pick up a bug in one of these places it is a miracle .
