Thai TV shows on-screen murder and utter lack of ethical priorities

Thai TV shows on-screen murder and utter lack of ethical priorities

The broadcast of CCTV footage of a murder on Thai television again raises questions about media ethics in Thailand, especially considering what they have censored instead.

The footage shows a quiet evening in the office of a car repair shop in Chon Buri descending into violence as a man suddenly stands up from his chair, pulls out a gun and shoots at two women sitting on the sofa opposite of him, later to be revealed as his fiancé and her mother. One of them immediately slumps, the other managed to run out to the door, only to collapse in front of it. The shooter follows her to the garage and walks away from the scene.

The fact that I was able to describe the scene in its gruesome detail (and omitted a lot of other details, such as the exact address of the crime scene and names of those involved) is ‘thanks’ to free-to-air Channel 3, who showed the complete footage of the murder in its entirety without any cuts or prior note of warning. The only censorship measure that was taken here was to blur the gun!

A screengrab of a Channel 3 showing the CCTV footage of a man drawing gun moments before the murder - the gun blurred while the footage ran in its entirety.

This scene shows an absurd disconnect between what has been censored and what may should have been omitted. While the blurring of firearms being drawn on people in both fictional and non-fictional programs is a regular occurrence (as is the minimal pixelation of bodies at crime scenes), it really begs the question if it was necessary to show the moments of two people’s deaths.

However, this is not the first time Thai media outlets have shown poor ethical judgment in reporting on crime stories. In February of this year the newspaper Daily News reported on a gang rape victim by fully disclosing her name and personal details, which were later removed following heavy criticism by its readers. Before that, a 12-year-old girl, freed from years of slavery and torture, was paraded almost naked by local police in front of the media to show her mutilated body – oblivious of potentially adding further trauma to her.

In general, it appears that victims of crimes in Thailand cannot expect any protection by the media as there are no apparent stop-gap between the media and police, who provide all the details (and access to the crime scenes) of the case that is then replicated in the news almost word for word.

Considering what else is being arbitrarily censored on Thai TV (e.g. smoking and bare female breasts) one really has to ask where the ethical priorities lie in Thai media – if there are any at all!

Ethics, common sense, logic and decency are alien concepts to the uncivilised.

To expect the thai police and media to exhibit those qualities is proof indeed that most thai commentators inhabit a world of fantasy, superficiality and false hope.

Colonisation by a superior civilisation would have been a blessing to these hopeless primitives.

The shooter walked outside afterwards and did a little dance on the way to his car. Quite pleased with himself, he was. Apparently the targets were gf and mother in law, thats if my understanding of the commentary is any good.

its the MIL who runs away and gets executed at the door?

when he is sitting, there is a police sirene, and he gets up a bit..
as if looking out of the office, then sits, relaxes..

it seems, as if the women already know he will pull a gun, as i think he doesnt hold it when they already "shield"... first he shoots the gf...

Looking at video, I assume these are stationary security cameras that are recorded. Noted that the video being shown moved around..where you would think the stationary nature would not have walls and things move about the edges. Almost like a hand held camera. Perhaps what they show is a video of a video?

Anyways, back to the topic... nothing surprises me, the ethics here are unique to say the least. Let's cover boobs and guns, but show people being shot. Oh well... as we all say.. TIT

Good thegent impression. Should the UN have international rules on TV content? Or should ppl be alowed to do what they want?

The commentary alludes to the 'fact' the gunman was probably under the influence of illegal drugs.

(No surprise as they bring that into nearly *every* crime report)

The Chinese aren't interested in the spats of the natives, only how much money they can extract from the society.

This one really seemed strange, if he was as nuts as that video makes him look, how did he hide it long enough to get to the point of having a planned marriage date with the victim in 4 weeks?

Purchase price... She looks much younger and is quite attractive, him not so... Thai's tend to overlook a lot of negatives when the right amount is proposed. But maybe the original negotiated price was in remorse & being renegotiated and that's what snapped him? He felt teased and loss of face, egotistical Thai male (evident by his after kill victory dance, definitely comes off more like a failed business deal) that'll do it! End result 2 dead people..

I have noticed this as well. In the west nobody really cares what you have or do except the really shallow, but here if someone decides to put a new roof on their hut the rest of the village hates their guts for a year and hopes that they get sick and die. Their jelousy is that bad. Even among most family members it is similar.

While my MIL was dying of liver cancer a neighbor would play Thai folk songs about cancer and dying from it and quite a few people would talk to her about people dying of cancer often. It was like they wanted her to die just because her daughter married me so their family got a little bit ahead of them so her death would be a good punishment for her luck.

Sadly I was not in Thailand at that time or I would have put a stop to it one way or another.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!
