Five Fugitive Criminals Caught Hiding In Thailand

Immigration police arrested five fugitives from France, Austria and South Korea involving three separate criminal cases. Two cases involved automobile thefts, and the third case involved ganja drug smuggling.

BANGKOK – March 15, 2013 [PDN]; the arrests of five foreigners for crimes committed in other countries was announced at the Wayuphak 4 meeting room of the office center by Jaeng Watthana; Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanu Kerdlarpphol, Commissioner of immigration office; Pol. Maj. Gen. Ronnasil Phusara, Commander; and Pol. Maj. Gen. Kreangsak Aroonsophon, Commander.

The first case involved the arrest of Mr. Anunu Abdraearman, age 25, nationality French. The suspect was wanted by the international arrest warrant issued by the court of Nongtaire, France, dated December 9, 2012
The suspect and 4 friends in the same gang had been arrested in France on car theft charges. The suspects would hack the information of the car key of a new automobile and then steal the car. After attaching a fake license plate and making fake documents, the thieves would sell the car on the internet.

Altogether the car theft gang had stolen 33 cars with total damages estimated at 44 million THB. Most of the stolen cars were Citroen, Peugeot and Mercedes-Benz models.

The behavior of the thieves was that after hacking the information of the car key, they brought the stolen information to the automobile showroom and claimed that they had lost their car key, in order to get a new duplicate key.

Then they had a team follow the target car. When the target car that they wanted to steal went to park at a garage or parking lot, the thieves would steal the car. Then they would put on the fake license plate and use the new fake documents to sell the stolen vehicle on the internet.

After the French officers arrested all the members of the car-theft gang, Mr. Anunu managed to escape into Thailand. So the Thai officers coordinated with the France embassy to find the fugitive.

The police eventually detected the whereabouts of the foreigner, until in the early morning of March 12, the Thai officers arrested the suspect in front of the Green Ice shop on Soi Yen Sabai, Moo 10 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung.

In the second criminal case, the Austria embassy helped coordinate the arrests of two suspects, identified as Mr. Rene Schmith, age 29, and Ms. Simone Antherweger, age 30.

Both of them are of Austrian nationality. The arrest warrant on drug dealing charges was issued by the Austria government. The suspects are accused of hiring other people to smuggle 14 kg of ganja from India to Austria.

After coordinating with the Austrian embassy, the Thai officers investigated and discovered that the defendants escaped to Thailand and were moving around many areas, such as Koh Samui, Buriram and Bangkok .

The defendants had brought a KTM motorbike from Austria that they used for their escape vehicle to travel around Thailand. Then on March 13, the Thai police arrested them at Pechkasem Road, Tambon Wangphai, Amphur Meuang, Choomporn province.

In the third case, the Thai officers coordinated with the South Korea embassy to arrest Mr. Cheewa Jong, age 28; and Mr. Kansoop Sow, age 33, both from South Korea.

Mr. Cheewa Jong was the manager of Car Story Co., Ltd. which sells imported cars. He had joined with two other friends to deceive victims to invest in buying the imported cars.

They told the victims that they will get a high compensation for their investment, which made many victims believe them. Many lost money, with the worth of damage costs estimated at 5 million THB.

Mr. Kansoop Sow was named in the arrest warrant of South Korea in the case of cheating and stealing property, and in a case of drug charges, totaling 8 criminal violations altogether. Both South Korean fugitives travelled to escape into Thailand, but were arrested by Thai officers on March 12, 2013, at the Avana hotel in Bangna, Bangkok.

You'd think if you're a foreign criminal in Thailand trying to lie low you'd go somewhere a little off the beaten track

    NOT Koh Samui & Bangkok
