I smell terrorism-related works in Chiang Mai : Chalerm

    February 12, 2013 2:05 pm

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung on Tuesday claimed he’d had a "sniff" of terrorism-related activities in Chiang Mai.

He said police in the region had already been assigned to reinforce security at the US Consulate General in the province.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Terrorist alert for US consulate in Chiang Mai | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

    Security alert at US consulate
Police have stepped up security at the United States consulate in Chiang Mai city after receiving information that Al-Qaeda and Salafist terrorists planned to attack it in the first half of February.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday she had been briefed on the information and ordered police to step up security at the US consulate in the North, although the US embassy had not made any special request.

Police armed with HK33 rifles from the provincial police headquarters are reportedly on security duty at the consulate around the clock in shifts of seven members each.

A checkpoint has been set up in front of the consulate. No parking of vehicles is allowed on the road in front of the consulate.

Pol Col Aksorn Wongyai, the Muang Chiang Mai police chief, said there had not been any threat made.

The only special event taking place is the Cobra Gold joint military exercise, involving troops from many countries including the US, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand, in Chiang Mai from Feb 11-21.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said according to information reaching the government, Al-Qaeda and Salafist terrorists planned to launch a three-pronged attack the US consulate in Chiang Mai in an operation codenamed "Billiard Ball".

The terrorists would be equipped with small arms, grenade launchers and C-4 charges provided by drug traders who were not satisfied with the role of the US consulate in Chiang Mai in drugs suppression in the region, Mr Chalerm added.

Mr Chalerm said he ordered Pol Lt-Gen Suthep Dejraksa, the Region 5 Provincial Police chief, to beef up security at the consulate from Feb 6.

He said this matter would not affect Ms Yingluck's scheduled visit Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai during Feb 13-15.

    Terrorism. Defined.
All he needs to do is look around....the establishment infrastructure provides plenty of fodder for terror-like activities. Extending fear...

Al Queda running errands for Thai drug traders sounds about as likely a scenario as Noam Chomsky writing a book singing the praise of George W Bush.

Maybe Chalerm got hold of a scenario description for the Cobra Gold exercise and thought it was real.

Security gets beefed up in Chiang Mai after terror attack threat

    THE NATION February 13, 2013 1:00 am

Security has been strengthened in Chiang Mai following warnings of a planned terrorist attack against the US Consulate, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday.

"The United States has not requested extra measures but Thailand will take every precaution," she said.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said he instructed Provincial Police Region 5 commissioner Lt-General Suthep Detraksa to ensure security and monitor for any suspicious activity since last Wednesday.

In Bangkok, US Embassy spokesman Walter Braunohler said the consulate remained open for business but said precautions will be taken to protect US facilities.

"We continue to take every precaution to protect our facility - whether it’s in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or worldwide - our employees and our visitors," Braunohler told Associated Press.

Chalerm said the tip-off about the planned attack came from domestic sources and not foreign intelligence.

"At issue is not the reliability of the report but the vigilance to foil violence." He refused to comment or speculate on the linkage about the warning and the Cobra Gold military exercise.

He said he believed the planned attack may have been aborted and that the terrorists had left the country because their plan was exposed.

Chiang Mai governor Thanin Supasaen said authorities were checking guesthouses where suspected terrorists might stay. "I have met with security authorities every day but found no suspicious activities at this juncture," the governor said.

Chiang Mai Police commander Maj-General Kasemsant Boonyakan said he had circulated the names of 15 suspected terrorists to all hotels and guesthouses.

At the consulate, the provincial police have set up a command post to provide round-the-clock security.

A bit like a school director interviewing me for a job once in CM who claimed that my degree cert, was a fake after sniffing at it.

Suspected terrorist has left Thailand - source | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

    Al-Qaeda terrorist 'has left Thailand'

Only one member of an al-Qaeda terrorist group had entered Thailand as part of the plot to attack a US consulate and he had already fled to Malaysia, a Thai security source said on Wednesday.

The source said the special branch police in Malaysia were preparing to apprehend the suspect, who has earlier been followed by Thai security officials.

The source said the United States consulate in Chiang Mai only wanted Thailand to beef up security for the US embassy, while the consulate itself had not taken any special security measures.

The US consulate in Chiang Mai remains open for visa services for tourists travelling to the US as usual.

The revelation of a possible terrorist attack in Chiang Mai might also be link to the ongoing Cobra Gold exercise in the province, the source said.

The information followed a remark made earlier by Deputy Prime Mnister Chalerm Yubamrung that some of the al-Qaeda and Salafist terrorists had already left Thailand after the plan to attack the consulate was exposed.

Pol Lt-Gen Suthep Dejraksa, the Region 5 Provincial Police chief, said four to five more uniformed police had been added to the existing force guarding the front of the US consulate by the Ping River.

Plainclothes policemen had also been deployed on security duty around the consulate.

Police had been instructed to also keep a close watch on foreign tourists staying in houses for rent, guest houses and renting cars, to ensure their safety, he said.

However he did it, seeing more imaginary terrorists than the American Government is quite a rare achievement.

Could well be that Chalerm should reflect on the simple fact that he's got all the very real Islamic terrorists he can handle in the South Of Thailand without adding to it and Imagining them in the North too

Now the trick is to see what little gem of news they slipped out at the same time as all this shit was happening. Must be something there to anger Americans. Or is there some big yankie stiff in town with a check book open that Chalerm wanted to get his mitts onto? "My son shot the terrorists for you Mr CIA man sir. Give me some money please. Ohhh I love money. Gold and money. I can buy wine and get drunk"

I found both video's interesting ,however its only a name , but IMHO without a shadow of doubt there is a very real war (Jihad) going on out there , the rise of Islamic radicalism is very real whatever one wants to Christian it ,I found this article too, Op-Ed: Does Al-Qaeda exist? I suppose one could rightly argue on either view ,but I hardly see the point cos whichever name any one calls it the problem is quite real.

^ Yes, no one is saying the terrorists don't exist, but the reality is now that the US has created the boogyman, any jihad nutter with a gun or grenade is labeled Al Qeada or xxx splinter cell of Al Qeada, or takes that name for themselves. There is no super secret organization of that name hiding in a fortified base under the extinct volcano...however much the Acronyms would like to scare the world into believing it. Osama and his buddies had one good crack at it and then they were done.

Yeah Necron I tend to concur with your opinion ,the link in my post #21 appeared to do the same too , but I also think that there are many Islamic groups world wide who seek to do the West no good at all ,but it would be stretching it somewhat to call them Al Qaeda

(at the risk of getting into one of these threads that spins in crazy circles)

The growth of small pockets of potentially violent disgruntled individuals who happen to be muslim is largely a result of the US Government / CIA invented Al Qaeda, in the first place. As from them marching all over the middle east and vilifying Islam in a non stop war upon it, they also give them a hero (OBLaden) to look up to and a belief in a big network they could join. They want to be part of the gang. The USA has created a load of "terror cells" if they exist, themselves.

    Dumb twats.
