Phuket Motorcycle Crashes Claim Third Expat Victim

    By Sert Tongdee
    Saturday, December 22, 2012

PHUKET: An expat man remains unidentified after he was killed in a motorcycle crash yesterday in Phuket City - the third bike-related expat fatality on Phuket within five days.

The man, aged about 60 and wearing shorts and a t-shirt, ran into the rear of a pickup near Suan Luang Park, in Wirat Hongyok Road, and broke his neck about 4pm.

Paramedics could find no identification. The man's body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

Police will try to trace the identity of the man through the motorcycle. He was wearing a ring and an arm bracelet.

His death is the third motorcycle-crash death of an expat since December 17. The previous victims were men from Turkmenistan and the US.

Expat deaths on motorcycles on Phuket surge at this time each year with the approach of the festive season.

He didn't care before he hit his noggin either. Bad case of the dumb-ass in my book, motorbike riding that is in Thailand.

    ^ think I'd agree
the simple concept of not traveling so close/fast you can't stop in the clear distance ahead, or at least have time to swerve to avoid a hazard. Article doesn't say if pickup was moving, in a traffic flow. Could have been parked on the side of the road. We don't know.
Odd he had no ID - and hasn't been identified, tourists tend to carry wallets/ID, who owned the bike - rented or owned should be easy to track down, if rented they'd have his details.
Nothing to say that at 4pm Mr Farang couldn't have been pissed on his way home.

Even in US got to keep your eyes open and stay sober, No excuse for running into back of truck. I have been coming to Pattaya for 5 yrs and live on bike the whole time. I am 70 yrs old and enjoy biking there way more then US, can pass anytime right or left no tickets. Just got to be good rider, not much front brake etc. wish I was there now.

The vast majority of Thai,s ain't a clue of what "dropping down a cog " means to slow them down , they brake in 4th or 5th then ride the clutch until it picks up speed again , I live on a main highway and right in front of my house is a right hand turn so I see this day in day out ,also when taking the turn in almost all cases its done on the wrong side of the road , Thai's just love to cut corners

If you pass on the left in Thailand, then it's clear that you are not a good rider. It's completely unsafe and you're putting other road users at risk. You should overtake on the right.

Ive seen truck taxi drivers shift down to slow. It saves them on brakes. The pros do it. Most westerners cant even drive a standard, never mind "dropping down a cog"

My 1995 Firebird owners manual says the proper way to slow down in the car (6 speed manual) is to pop in into neutral and use the brakes.

Erm, a motorcycle is not a bicycle, 70% of your stopping power is from the front brakes, a good rider would use them often.

Quite correct the rear brake on a motor bike is practically useless if you need to stop quickly , even when out on on my mountain bike I very rarely use the back brake to avoid hitting the usual Soi dog !

Shifting down on a big bike is the recommended way of slowing down. Jumping on the front brakes is not a good idea.

Yeah, on a race track as it will reduce friction and keep brakes from overheating (note that 'slowing down' and 'stopping' are two different things)- on the street in an emergency situation you'd better know how to properly use your front brake.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
