Thailand and Cambodia will launch the first bus services linking Bangkok with Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in the next two weeks.

The first bus service between the two countries will debut on Dec 29, said The Transport Co, a state enterprise under the Transport Ministry.

The service includes the Bangkok-Siem Reap route, a 424-kilometre trip that takes about seven hours. The two countries will provide two trips a day. The fare will be 750 baht or US$25.

The Bangkok-Phnom Penh service, covering 719km and taking 11 hours, will run once a day with a fare of 900 baht or $30.

Air-conditioned buses will serve both routes, which will run through Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo province.

Siem Reap, the home of Angkor Wat, is the most popular tourist destination for Thai and foreign travellers visiting Cambodia.

Transport Co managing director Wutthichart Kalayanamit signed an agreement with Natthakarn (Cambodia) Co at the state enterprise's head office in Bangkok on Friday.

Transport Co plans to eventually provide as many as 20 trips a day on both routes if needed to meet the rising demand of travellers between the two countries.

Niyom Waiyaratpanich, vice-president of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said the Thai-Cambodian bus routes reflected the goal of Asean to build more links among its 10 members.

The new bus routes will help accommodate an expected upturn in travel when the Asean Economic Community is launched in late 2015, he added.

If the PP embassy start to open up for visas (I believe they're currently really tight and about the worst in the area to deal with, only give single-entry and not multi-entry Imm visas), this is going to be a very, very popular service.

Even a long weekend break to Angkor Wat has become a lot more affordable to most.

I predict this is really going to take off.

Any details as to where the Bangkok departure place is?
I'm guessing it will be Mo Chit bus terminal.

Buses to Aranyaprathet leave from Morchit, so I'd guess these one will to.

last went through Aranyaprathet/PoiPet in 2009, at that time a plague of touts wearing badges of 'official visa' etc to 'help' with the required Cambodian Visa.
Interested to know how the situation there is now?
Will bus drivers direct passengers to their favourite 'official' can see this being a hold-up in the trip.

This will also probably increase business at the border casinos. If I'm not mistaken, there's currently about eight of em already.

Not sure why I would want to go there for a visit/holiday. What does it have to offer that cannot be enjoyed in Thailand?

^Interesting temples that have been preserved with high archaeological standards, not just new coats of paint.

These buses should be very attractive to "drug runners." Non-stop to and from, no police checks at either end no doubt.

BTW, Are the immigration police going to check every traveler for his/her I.D., passport, destination, visa status, return tickets?

Thailand is suppose to be shipping 60,000 illegals from Cambodia back in the coming month. When the Cambodians leave, who's going to do the real work?

I would presume everybody will have to have a visa already.

Cambodian E-Visas are the best thing since sliced somtam for anyone traveling there over land.

I've gotten the international bus from Vientiane to Udon Thani a few times.

So I should be able to answer... but I've forgotten. Don't remember any big hullabaloo, think the bus just stopped where they stamp people out of Laos, everyone got off, got stamped out, then stamped into Thailand and back on the bus and off. No biggy.
