Phuket: Brit tourist stabbed in Krabi

Phuket: Brit tourist stabbed in Krabi

PHUKET: A 21-year-old British tourist has been admitted to Bangkok Hospital Phuket with injuries after he was stabbed by a 17-year-old Thai youth in Krabi on Monday (October 22), following a dispute.

Pol. Lt. Niwat Pimket of Krabi Police said Jack Daniel Cole, from England, was on holiday in Krabi, when he was attacked by a youth holding a 10-15 inch Spartan knife.

Mr Niwat said a group of teenagers and adults were at Noparat Beach around 10pm last Monday, when Mr Cole arrived with his girlfriend to wait for a boat to go back to the main Ao Nang area, where they were staying at the Centara hotel.

He was then set upon by the gang after he allegedly “shouted, pointed and yelled rude words” at the group, Mr Niwat said, but put the dispute down to miscommunication.

Mr Cole was then attacked by two men, one of whom was an 17-year-old who stabbed Mr Cole on the right side of his body with a 10-15 inch Spartan knife. An adult then kicked and punched Mr Cole. The group then ran away but the two were arrested by police the following day.

Mr Cole suffered stab wounds and other injuries to the right side of his body – mainly to his shoulder, arm and eyebrow, but his injuries are not serious, police said. His father is coming to visit him from England, and his injuries are expected to fully heal in five to six weeks. He did not require surgery.

Mr Niwat said he had spoken to the two arrested men already, and would visit Mr Cole in hospital in Phuket tomorrow (October 26) to investigate and get his side of the story.

Martin Carpenter, British Hon Consul, said he was liaising with the family and would help until Mr Cole returned to England.

Jack Daniel Cole may have been just a few bit too familier with his namesake on the night in question, hence the rowdyism.

It's a cowardly way to respond to verbal abuse but in the land of vengence maybe he wasn't aware of the possible consequences.

You might want to edit that a bit taxexile - the youth was 17 - not 7!

They should send these people on seminars before they come to Thailand on how to deal with locals. Much as stabbing is reprehensible did he really think he could go over to a group of locals and start pointing and shouting and not suffer any consequences ?

    Cheers

my bet is that the thai gimps, already armed with knives, were looking for trouble with the foreigner and provoked him into responding, thereby giving them an excuse to attack.

i wouldnt believe one word spoken by knife carrying thai thugs trying to justify their stabbing and subsequent beating of a tourist. truth is anathema to these neanderthal scum.

I had a close call in Krabi just a few months ago.

It was during a buddhist holiday and 7/11 would not sell beer.
At 7 pm a guy needs his beer for a sundowner.

My trusted motorbike driver came to aid me in the hour of distress.
Off we went to a small local store. "Wait here, I get it for you".
Minutes later he reappeared with 2 beers wrapped in paper. One for him, one for me.

    Ahh, all is good now.
As we were about to mount the bike, 2 thai guys drove by on a motor bike and I felt something passing me by a small margin.
They had hurled a big bottle of beer towards us, or.. the thai woman standing not so far from us.

The beer bottle smashed the window of the shop and there was a lot of commotion.

I asked the thai woman if she knew what this was all about, and if it was aimed at her, me or the motor bike driver? She didnt have a clue. Neither did the driver.

Suffice to say, that I was just happy not to have my travels cut short by a beer bottle hitting my head.

I went home, enough excitement for one night...

You've hit the nail on the head there mate. Along with all the other fluff they throw at incoming tourists should be a sentence reading something like this.

"In Thailand, fighting means fighting to the death. No matter how small the infraction, especially if there is alcohol involved, what you may think of as a drunken scrap followed by stitches, lumps on your head and black eyes is transformed easily into a life and death scenario. `Moral to the story is to let it go in the first place, and if it really has to kick off - be tooled up, merciless and run quickly for a border."

I Feared Gang Was Intent on Rape, Says Badly Stabbed, Slashed British Tourist

    By Alan Morison
    Thursday, October 25, 2012

PHUKET: A British tourist told tonight how he fought off a knife and machete gang in Krabi because he thought they wanted to rape his girlfriend - and praised another British man who saved his life.

Jack Daniel Cole, 21, displayed his multiple stab wounds to Phuketwan tonight as he recovered in a hospital on Phuket and said: ''I've been to hell and back.''

Mr Cole and his girlfriend, April Clifton, also 21, were attacked by the gang in Ao Nang, a popular Krabi tourist destination, about 11pm on Monday night.

''We had spent three nights in Bangkok and planned to spend 10 nights in Krabi,'' Mr Cole said from his bed at the Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City.

He has half-a-dozen knife wounds and a savage slash to the side of his face - probably inflicted by a machete - that required more than 30 stitches.

The worst of the knife wounds plunged eight centimetres into his shoulder, cutting tendons and piercing muscle. It will be six weeks, doctors say, before he can remove a sling and months before he can return to the gym.

But he and April are alive.

''All I can do is guess what they wanted,'' Mr Cole said tonight. ''But they did not want my wallet.

''When three of them chased after April, I chased after them. I managed to fight off the ones who surrounded me.

''I didn't know that I'd already been stabbed five or six times. They told me later that the blow to my head was probably from a machete.''

Another Brit who manages a dive shop and happened to be at a bar nearby staunched the massive bleeding, helped Mr Cole to Krabi Hospital, and ''saved my life, basically.''

The gang of five youths and two girls had gone past Mr Cole and Ms Clifton on their motorcycles - mopeds Mr Cole calls them - then doubled back and passed again, a little slower.

''We really weren't expecting it,'' Mr Cole said tonight. ''The first I knew was when a lump of concrete hit me in the back.

''Then I fought as hard as I could. When I saw that three of the males were chasing off after April, I took off after them. I was desperate to protect her.''

The slash and stab wounds down his right side show how desperate someone was to stop him.

If things had turned out differently, peaceful tourist destination Krabi could have had a murder to deal with.

As it turned out, Krabi police are still hunting members of the gang. They may have already arrested three of them.

Ms Clifton and her father, Clive, were travelling from Phuket to Krabi today to obtain the police incident statement that the couple will need to activate their travel insurance.

April's father was on a flight from Britain to Phuket as soon as he heard what had happened. And it was a wise thing.

''April is still feeling the effects of the attack,'' Mr Cole said. ''She found herself in trouble just walking down a street. So it's a good thing her father came to help.''

He says the reaction from resort staff, from the tour agents, from British honorary consul for Phuket, Martin Carpenter, from Tourist Police and others has been ''just wonderful.''

More lighting has even been installed along the walk the couple took after dinner in Ao Nang, back to catch the boat at the pier for their five-star resort.

Two Phuket City policemen dropped by as we talked tonight, making a courtesy call and anxious to not have the tourists' view of Krabi and Phuket entirely painted as full of gangs and bad people.

However, Mr Cole's wounds are alarming. Had he not fought off the attackers, it's difficult to know what might have happened.

It's not the first savage attack inflicted on tourists in Krabi this year. Other visitors have been raped.

Another, a young German tourist, had her thumb cut off in a brazen attack in Krabi Town. Apparently attacks are not as rare as tourists are led to believe.

Here's how the man who probably saved Mr Cole's life reported it on a chat room:

With high season approaching, In Ao Nang. I fear that another tourist death is imminent. Gangs of teenage kids, armed with knifes and machetes roam the roads like something out of a Hollywood horror movie. Where are the police ? Where are the lights, I know this is a long term problem in Ao Nang as it's been my home for six years. I would like to inform you, about my encounter last night. Around 10.50 pm, While sitting in a quiet bar in the Nopparattara national park, next to the pier. A man and his girlfriend approached me asking me to help them. At first I just thought they wanted directions or something, when I saw them in the light. Then I realised they needed life saving help, with the man's head pumping blood like a fountain... I shouted to a friend to call the rescue service, the wound to the head was around 4 inches in length and skull exposed. On further inspection to his body, I found deep stab wounds . . . After we had stopped most of the blood flow the rescue guys came,Thank God.In all my life, I have never witnessed any like this, and I've been around somewhat....While we were trying to stop the blood and reassuring the man I had chance to talk to his girlfriend, about what had led to the attack. They were walking from Ao Nang beach, to the Nopparattara Pier to catch a speedboat back to their resort. At 11.30pm. After a nice meal they thought better to walk, as they had plenty of time. Just 1 minute before the pier, they were approached by 4 boys and 3 girls . . . No exchange of words, then the boys started to lob bricks and stones, hitting them many times, suddenly the boys ran towards them, pushing the girl to the ground. On this, the man tried to help his girlfriend up. While he was down they repeatedly struck him with a machete and stabbed him. WTF is wrong with this place!!! I accompanied the girl to the Krabi Hospital where I witnessed the same old story. You pay or no treatment. The resort where they were staying kindly brought his and hers passports, money and the life saving Insurance doc. I've been in contact since and they are both doing fine. With the uk embassy helping them as well. After reading their facebook page and seeing how excited they were. Only 3 days to go 2 days to go then tomorrow off to paradise...Well some Paradise its turned out to be!!!!....I hope the cctv will help catch these little cowardly thugs . . . A very upset/shocked and pissed off Mr Huw.

For all that, the murder and assault rates per head of population are lower in Thailand than North America, and so are rapes and burglaries.

Where Thailand is now leading the field is in firearms homicides.

This is not to say that you're more likely to get shot walking around minding your own business in Thailand.
Most of that gun crime is to do with loss of face, stuffed up romances and of course money.

While a lot of news articles appear depicting Thais as a brutal bunch of criminals who'll rip you off or beat you up on a whim, that idea is not born out by statistics, nor my experience.

Some districts in Thailand are hot spots for crimes against foreigners, and obviously places like Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui and a few other locales spring to mind.

Assaults on foreigners there cluster around assault with intent to rob, and the show of unguarded (comparative) wealth by tourists in those locales prompts unscrupulous street Thai to theft. This is the norm anywhere that an ostentatious show of wealth occurs.

The same goes for sexual assaults, be it on Thai or Farang, flash the gash or be unguarded and some freak will jump a defenceless woman.

What happened to Jack Daniels and his lady could have happened in the states too, just by being in the wrong neighbourhood, but with one exceptional difference.

The gang culture has grown tremendously in Thailand over the last few years, and so has the availability of guns. This has forced wannabees to arm themselves with an assortment of other weapons, and the ability to escape quickly on a motocy has added the extra impetus to get in and out quickly on a hit.

The use of drugs, especially yaba has risen massively in Thailand, making the wannabees even more stupid.

Once it was opium and to a lesser extent ganja and of course lao kao/alcohol, but speed kills.

nice way to be welcomed in the emergency room. had he been alone and/or unconscious would they have just thrown this tourist/guest of the country back out onto the street to bleed to death?

this useless country is home to some of the most heartless, selfish, greedy and uncivilised people on the planet.

Must agree with ENT on this one.

In my home town of Perth one risks assault and brutal attack by gangs if venturing into the city at night.

Home invasions are the norm these days, ram raids and murder ain't unusual.

I'm sup-post to be living in a civilized first world country governed by a proficient police force and rule of law.

Pigs foking arse I am, its a jungle out there.

I feel much safer banging around Thailand and many of the other countries I visit.

The case above is alarming but I can read about the same offense back home

Sooner or later Thailand catches up with you! Not much you can do about it by try to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions - much as you would do if you lived in Perth!

Having said that, it's easy to buy into the hype of 'paradise' and 'the people are so friendly' bullshit!

We live in a different world than 20 or 40 years ago. At one time the peasants bowed down to us white folk and did as they where told. Yobs in third world countries seem to be as dangerous as manchester, Paris New york or any place else. Sad, Krabbi had a good rep. But this poor sod probably would have been more careful back home. I used to be a principal in a high school, It was a good school small town laid back, but bloody nora, every thing from guns to knifes to stun guns.

Having worked the doors back home for 10 years I can tell you he could well have asked for all he got. maybe thought he was back home and got fresh with his mouth. I have seen it here many times with drunken Farangs, sadly especially Brits.
Also you do not get stabbed with a 10 - 15 inch knife and not need surgery. He may have been cut a few times to teach him a lesson is the way I see it.
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !
