Navy says sorry for Gangnam Style clip

The YouTube clip of naval officers doing a Gangnam Style dance was never intended for the public, says the naval commander in charge of their unit.

A photo captured from YouTube shows naval officers from Third Naval Area Command performing their version of the international hit Gangnam Style dance by South Korean rapper Psy.

Third Naval Area commander Tharaton Khachitsuwan said the video clip showing members of the Thai navy performing a Gangnam Style dance was part of an entertainment programme for retired personnel.

Vice Adm Tharaton said the video was played during a retirement party on Sept 26 in Phuket.

After that, it was posted on YouTube and picked up by television news programmes the next morning.

The commander said he had told his subordinates to come up with something fun for the party, which officers of various ranks and other staff could perform together.

Vice Adm Tharaton said the performance was never intended to be made public.

The video was created in good faith and as a goodwill gesture for the navy's retirees.

He said he was sorry if some people found it improper or offensive.

A source in the navy said Navy Commander Surasak Rounroengrom did not regard it a serious offence.

The navy's video clip has received about 170,000 views on YouTube, while the original clip performed by Park Jae-sang or "Psy" has generated millions of views worldwide.

    Improper or offensive? jeez...

Does anybody (besides the French) take the Thai Navy seriously? Just a bunch of dudes with obsolete equipment and puzzling uniforms sitting around with nothing to do.

Why, beside the French? During the Thai-Franco war, the French defeated the Thai Navy in the battle of Ko Chang. The war on land, was not won by either side as the Japanese brokered a deal, contrary to what might be claimed. The Japanese then took the opportunity to move in.

I remember seeing US troops in Afghanistan doing a sequence of improvised rap songs for a documentary about music in combat. It was quite good. Not sure what the fuss is about. Even soldiers are allowed to have fun.

You are speaking about 1 of only 10 Naval forces in the world to be running a currently operational aircraft carrier!

^ Except they cant afford the fuel to take it out of port, nor do they have any functional aircraft that can land on it (except helicopters).

Quite right, sir. I suppose what I meant was, when was the last time they engaged an enemy by sea? Most recent one I can think of.

If I wanted to make a snide comment about the French, I'd just call them butterfinger turtlenecked snail-snapping surrender monkeys.

Jeez, some people need to geddalife. No harm in it at all- every year at the oz naval college we had a 'jazz and revue' put on by the cadets. It was a fun night, and naturally a bit of lampooning went on, absolutely no harm in it.
